Senate committee ends work on state budget with 20.9 billion total
The Senate Finance Committee completed a 1980-81 state budget totaling 20.9 billion, about 600 million more than the House plan. Gov. Bill Clements called the House proposal unacceptable and said a conference committee will settle the differences. The panel also tentatively approved judiciary raises and a 5.1 percent pay hike for teachers and state employees, with further realignment likely.

End not insight Administration offers little hope on inflation
President Carter's advisers show little confidence that inflation is easing. The March 1 percent rise, driven by food, fuel, and housing, pushes Q1 1979 inflation to 13 percent. Officials stress continued anti inflation measures and warn of months of bad news ahead. Social Security benefits rise 9.9 percent to offset inflation, and sugar price increases move forward to aid U.S. growers.
