The Pecos school board voted to light the football field and has bought 60 foot poles now curing at Carlsbad New Mexico. Western Electric salesman Roy Bell said districts with lights drew crowds and one game drew 1800 after installation. Local weather chatter continues with predictions and prophecies about rain.
Pred Wagner explains that the power shovel at the federal building site will escape the hole on its own. He says the machine creates its own run way and pulls itself out, easing concerns about excess dirt.
An organization of hotel proprietors garage and filling station men and other tourist trade contacts will be formed and sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce next week. It will be a permanent body to pursue projects and suggestions to increase tourist travel through Pecos and to safeguard the city's highway interests.
The Herbert Oil Co. reports a wildcat in Reeves county near Pecos at about 600 feet with tests in the Toyah area shut down at 4100 feet awaiting instructions. Other Reeves county wildcat rumors circulate as crews prepare drilling plans this weekend.
Kent lad Dudley Rutledge, seriously burned in a recent accident, underwent skin grafts to both legs Thursday afternoon and is recovering well, say physicians.

Soft water reached Pecos city limits Thursday but not for consumption yet. The 10 inch cast iron pipeline by C F Lytle and Sons reached the reservoir at the city limits and was loaded with water though distribution to mains remains weeks away. Pipe work continues Cypress street to the pumping plant and reservoir work progresses with most concrete poured. The project is advancing quickly and may finish ahead of the four month estimate.
The Red Bluff board of directors will meet Friday to hear the report by consulting engineer N Floyd on the dam project. If approved, recommendations will go to Washington for fast sanction and possible resumption of work. J Boron, Imperial vice president, elected president after R N Couch’s death. Miller remains secretary-treasurer. Test holes along the dam course show several satisfactory spillway foundations located.
John Becker, San Angelo architect, prepared complete plans and specifications for the proposed Reeves courthouse. The commissioners court has those plans. With the $4,000,000 works bill now law, a loan application for the courthouse is expected to be submitted soon.
Pecos Rotarians and Rotary-Annes travel to Santa Fe New Mexico for the 42nd district convention of Rotary International. Attendees include Mr. and Mrs. Dudley Yard, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Sparks, Mr. and Mrs. Beauchamp, and Mr. Kerr who is on the program. last year he presided as district governor of the 42nd district.
County Judge J. B. Woolfolk placed 7500 of county money on a six month time deposit. Banks no longer pay interest on county deposits, but time deposits offer 2 1/2 to 5 percent annually.
A Pecos group of property owners met with the Pecos city council at city hall last Friday to consider cutting commercial electric power rates. The meeting featured a plan for a municipal light plant and a general round table discussion led by Mayor B. A. Tyeliver.
Mrs J F Christian of El Paso long resident of Pecos visits friends including Mr and Mrs Howard Collier Mrs J G Love and Mrs B G Smith in a social gathering highlighting regional connections and personal ties.
Two relief projects were approved this week. City Hall improvements include wall repair and a new floor with 1040 in relief wages and 707 from the city for trucks and materials, employing 20 men about a month. Red Bluff jail construction will use 10 men for 30 days with 941 from the state relief administration, starting Friday.
The Pecos district Scout Leaders' training school opened at Pecos High School Wednesday under Scout Executive A. C. Williamson of Sweetwater. Seventeen men formed three patrols led by Ralph Williams, Dunigan, and Johnson. Sessions continued in Monahans and Wink with two outdoor sessions planned in the third week at an undetermined location.
Pets of all sizes and descriptions will march through Pecos Saturday afternoon May 4 in the second annual Pet Show sponsored by the Pecos Rotary Club. Entry is free and prizes will honor the clever and novel. Youth Week activities run April 29 to May 4 with sermons, school visits, downtown youth events, student elections, athletic events, and political speaking programs.
Mrs. Cox of Artesia New Mexico entertained Pecos Lions at the Brandon Hotel coffee shop for a Wednesday noon meeting. She is a talented violinist and whistler and her portion of the program was well received by the Lions. H. P. Davis presided.
Mayor K A Toliver proclaims May 4 Straw Hat Day in Pecos. After the date, felt top gear will be taboo and a formal proclamation will appear in next week’s Enterprise.
Postmaster M W Collie announced that Pecos Chamber of Commerce and Pecos city council will co sponsor the cornerstone ceremony for the new federal building. The event is planned for about 60 days from now with broad participation requested from civic groups clubs fraternal orders and local district organizations.
Reeves County votes to redeem about 143000 in road bonds at lower rates. A new bond issue at 4 5 percent will fund the refunding, with three investment houses taking the issue. Judge J B Woolfolk says the plan also covers a sinking fund deficit from years of insufficient tax revenue, mirroring a recent El Paso savings of ten thousand dollars annually.
Conoco eked out a 7 to 6 win over Wadley after nine packed innings at Alkali Park. Glen Klinger threw a three-ball inning for Conoco, with Pruett catching and Sharp and Stubblefield pitching for Wadleys, while Clinton and Withers umpired the game.
Rep. R. E. Thomason announced that the War Department will station a detachment of field artillery at Fort D. A. Russell in Marfa. Five hundred men will be stationed there, bringing military protection to Pecos and the region.
Three Wink ladies were seriously injured last Wednesday when their car overturned near Van Horn on the way to a Presbyterian meeting. Mrs Smalley suffered a broken arm and cuts while Mrs Blake and Mrs Davis had lacerations from glass and bruises. all are resting in a Pecos hospital. Exact cause of the crash could not be determined.
Pecos will stage a fine card of horse races on Saturday May 11 announced by E G Doty manager. Entries include strings from Kent Odessa Fort Stockton Midland and other areas. Five races are planned with possible additional events and good prizes. The track is south of town on the Fort Stockton road.
Catherine Armstrong daughter of Mr and Mrs C E Armstrong Vecos accidentally shot herself with a .22 calibre pistol Tuesday morning. The middle finger of her left hand was seriously injured but not torn off. She received first aid and is now recovering.
After a three day district conference in Roswell New Mexico delegates vote to instruct trustees to relocate the Roswell district headquarters to Pecos or Carlsbad Texas and New Mexico. Pecos favored to bring new families and more visitors to the conference parsonage. H S B Davis elected district parsonage trustee to help decide the change. Notables Dr R J Walker Dr C Q Smith and Dr R F Dickenson attended.
Southern Union Gas Co records indicate unusually high April temperatures with a 93 degree peak on April 14 and multiple days above 90. The month’s low so far is 40, with only trace rainfall recorded.
