South Africa Faces Expulsion From Davis and Federation Cups
The ITF announced in Monte Carlo that South Africa has been expelled from both the Davis Cup and Federation Cup due to its racial policies. U.S. Davis Cup chairman Joseph Carrico said the decision may be premature and that a July Stockholm meeting could vote to expel, needing three quarters of 97 nations. South Africa had won the 1974 Davis Cup amid boycotts, while protests have disrupted both cups for years. The note adds the weight of the Louisiana Superdome for the 1978 event, cited as about 300000 tons.
