Bighorn sheep may soon roam Van Horn range
The Sierra Diablo Wildlife Management Area near Van Horn was created to preserve the desert bighorn sheep, but by 1958 the last Texas herd had perished. Now about five sheep remain, imported from elsewhere, with plans to move more from Black Gap. Biologists study dispersal, radio tracking, and reintroduction while Sierra Diablo also shelters mule deer research and endangered species like golden eagle mountain lion and bald eagle. The region preserves rare flora and remains one of Texas's few intact mountain grassland habitats.
