Igor Stravinsky, a leading 20th century composer, died today at his Fifth Avenue apartment in New York of an apparent heart attack. He was 88 and had suffered illness for about a year. The influential figure remained controversial yet celebrated for six decades.
Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike announced that insurgents identified as Che Guevara followers attempted to seize Colombo. Troops were deployed islandwide as attacks on police stations patrols and government buildings were repelled.

Pecos High School finishes season with varsity placing fifth, B team second, and freshmen second in 24AA district. Team members include Jack Mc Gowen, Kim Anderson, Rusty Neilson, Steve Clinton, and Shane Schmidt. Craig Carrico led the B team with 1398 strokes behind Andrews 1357. Freshmen led by Rusty Neilson and Mike Powell finished second yesterday at Monahans with 348, while Powell shot 79 for runner up in medalist honors.
U S District Judge Joe Fisher sentenced Lincoln Ashford and two co-defendants after they pleaded no contest to conspiring to burn school and YMCA property in Tyler last fall. The sentences include prison terms and fines.

Senior division saw Pecos students sweep trophies with Joni Thompson and Mike Cravens taking top biology and math honors while Joni Thompson earned a sweepstakes alternate for Kansas City. Junior and elementary divisions highlighted West Pecos Junior High and South Pecos winners, with Cathy Brantley receiving American Cancer Society and other service awards.
