County to hike taxes after Bluebird Mine overvaluation
A $7.4 million overvaluation of the Bluebird Mine near Miami by the State Department of Revenue will trigger a seven cent property tax increase in Gila County this year. The three governments must refund $473,082.18 to Rancher's Exploration Co. and levy new taxes to cover the judgment. Repayments start immediately with six percent interest. the settlement stems from 1973 1974 and 1975 valuations and a December 1975 court decision.

Payson Council Studies Bidding Rules As Purchases Rise
Five town councilmen examine a proposed ordinance to require sealed bidding for goods and services after years of verbal policy. A local businessman, Nicholas Brotke of Pioneer Village, urged an investigation and wrote to the governor on Sept. 2 alleging lack of open bidding. The governor’s office replied Sept. 23 that Payson’s purchases were not improper and that no sealed bidding ordinance existed, though work on one is underway. The council also hired Mac McCreary to help draft plans for a permanent town hall and prepared to make another bid to United Utilities Water for Payson systems. the prior offer was rejected as ridiculous.
