In his first leg of the 1974 general election campaign Senator Barry Goldwater spoke to about 150 people at Payson High School. He flew in privately for the event at the invitation of the Ton to Rim Republican Club president Dot Brockman and attended a private dinner with the group.

The Gila County Fair opens Friday in Pine with bread, pumpkins, artwork, and quilts. Hundreds of entries will be juried during the day at the Pine Cultural Hall and Elementary School. Winners receive ribbons and cash prizes as a Pleasant Valley fair follows Saturday and Globe fair the next weekend.
