Voters in Gila County will choose nominees Tuesday in a primary election. Seven polling places open 6 am to 7 pm with 15 062 registered voters including 12 145 Democrats and 2 563 Republicans.
A wave of political ads dominates this week as candidates push campaigns for the upcoming primary. The section teases readers with pages 17 through and notes ad splashes aim to influence voter decisions and visibility ahead of the ballot.
County officials corrected 1974 and 1975 misapplied personal property values in the Payson Sanitary District, lowering the 1976 assessed valuation from 6.51 million to 3.83 million. With a fixed budget, the tax rate rose from 1.88 to 3.44, affecting taxpayers.
Sally Randall says preparations are complete for the Pine Strawberry Chamber of Commerce Barbecue on Saturday with entertainment led by Larry Bonoff. Barbecue runs from noon to 5 p.m. Adults pay 3 dollars and children 1.50. A horseshoe contest at 1:30 p.m. offers a prize, door prizes are drawn, and a softball game is planned.
At 3 p.m. activities include youth versus adults volleyball and a dance from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. Leroy Davis of the Rim Cafe performs with two others in the afternoon. An evening program follows with additional entertainment at Pine Pile School.
The Ladies auxiliary to the Payson Hospital Auxiliary announces its sixth annual Mile of Dimes fund raiser in Payson this weekend. Proceeds go to the hospital building fund for a new facility. The auxiliary has supported the hospital since 1965 and volunteers will collect at various businesses and locations. Donations are tax deductible.
