Payson saw extreme heat with temperatures reaching 96 degrees Sunday the highest this year. Weather Observer Anna Mae Deming reported Tuesday with prior readings of 92 on Saturday and 95 on Monday. Thousands fled the Valley of the Sun seeking cooler air as readings over 100 were common earlier. No precipitation was recorded during the week ending Tuesday.
O Malley Development Company wins approval from Gila County Planning and Zoning to convert Payson Country Club into 112 condominium units and 43 single family lots. The project regrades the golf course to 48 acres of the 73 acre site with 11 acres for units and 9.5 for lots. Sales target 22k to 33k for units and 36k for lots, expected revenue about 4.35 million.
One man, 47 year old Dave Whinery of Mesa, died after a motorcycle collision on Houston Mesa Road eight miles north of Payson. The crash involved a four wheel drive driven by 19 year old Cecil Newkirk of Phoenix. Three others were injured in separate incidents and investigators from the Payson sheriff's office pursued the cases.
Four year old Lee Fuller went missing near the Ponderosa Campgrounds on Monday and Tuesday. More than 50 volunteers from Sheriff’s Reserves Northern Gila County Sheriff’s Posse Payson Fire Department and other groups joined the search. He was located around 10 am near Dampground by firefighter Matthew Davis and returned to his grandparents and parents. He had only minor cuts and scratches.
Bill Thomas and Richard Robertson won seats on the Payson Town Council in a sparse election. Robertson received 224 votes and Thomas 175, with other totals for Landers 116 Young 160 and 365 total votes cast, 10 rejected. Voters approved staggered terms 189 to 115 and granted a water franchise to United Utilities, Inc. Robertson is assistant editor of The Payson Roundup and Thomas is project superintendent of Payson North.
Sixty six seniors will receive diplomas tonight in commencement ceremonies at Payson High School. The program begins at 8 p.m. in the stadium with Representative John Wettaw as principal speaker.
The Pine Strawberry Volunteer Fire Department reports a new business telephone number 476 3656 for official inquiries and calls.
Bill Thomas outlines expansion in Payson North including 35 shops and a service station east of Bee Line Highway and a retail center at Highways 87 and 260. Plans call for 700 more residential lots in Western Manor, survey stage for the center with July 15 detail, park improvements, new signs and benches. Swiss Village Merchants Association plans monthly sales from June and the Alpine Festival in October.
