Residents choose upgrade over new highway near Young
At a Pleasant Valley School hearing federal officials said the 26 mile existing road near Young should be improved for about 1.7 million dollars instead of constructing a new 16 mile route to Christopher Creek at an estimated 11.8 million dollars. The decision rests with the Federal Highway Administration Forest Service and Arizona DOT with a deadline in February 1978.

Eight Acre Forest Fire Northeast of Payson Contained
A seven to eight acre fire 11 miles northeast of Payson burned ponderosa pine Monday. It was controlled after six hours by 100 firefighters from Tonto and Coconino National Forests and clean-up continued Wednesday morning. Outdoor church summer service draws visitors near Kohl's Ranch
The Payson Ministerial Association held the first summer service at Chapel in the Hills beside Highway 260 in Kohl's Ranch. Rev. Orel Boteler led worship with Dolores Gursky at the organ, noting attendance above 100 on peak Sundays. The outdoor chapel, built in the early 1950s on forest land, serves multiple denominations and hosts weddings and services with flagstone donated by local residents.
