Phoenix artists won all first places at the festival with Mike Jacka named the best fiddler. Adjudicator praised his technical prowess and stage presence as competitors from nearby communities also earned top honors.
The Ton to Apaches gain formal ownership of an 85 acre reservation south of Payson after final transfer from the Forest Service to the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Two 16 year olds from Scottsdale started a fire on 180 acres near Mount Peeley to summon help after a gun accident wounded a friend. The blaze near Mazatzal wilderness drew 125 firefighters and was contained by Monday night. The injured teen was flown to Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix in fair condition. Civil action may be filed against the boys' parents to cover suppression costs estimated at 30000 dollars.
Walter Surrett of Payson was elected chairman of the Arizona Department of Transportation at its organization meeting Monday in Phoenix. He had chaired the Arizona Highway Commission since January 1970 as the new state agency came into being for fiscal year 1974 75. The merger of the Department of Aeronautics with the State Highway Department created the DOT.
