Payette High School kicks off the season Friday on its home field versus Parma with a large crowd expected. The team is lighter this year and two to three weeks behind others due to a late start in practice. New players show promise as several already shine in signal drills. Schedule features Oct 5 Parma, Oct 12 Weiser, Oct 19 Emmett, Oct 26 Nampa, Nov 9 Caldwell, Nov 16 Intermountain Institute. Every player will see time in early games to gain experience. He plans to move with his wife and son to Yreka California to become division superintendent for California Oregon Power Co covering five northern counties. Wood began with Idaho Power 14 years ago in Payette and rose to a top post.

Governor Inspects Highway Progress from Boise to Lewiston
Idaho Governor C. Moore toured the North and South Highway to assess status and justify criticism. About 200 miles of the 328 mile route from Boise to Lewiston are in good condition, while 12 miles between New Meadows and Round Watley await a bridge. Only 23 miles remain unfinished from Round Valley to Lucille in several sections with finished portions. The State Highway Department estimates 470,000 is needed to finish these parts, with at least 200,000 already spent on last year’s contracts. Two or three engineers supervise under federal aid covering 50 percent. Temporary clearing from gas tax funds 48 is underway, and further spending is deemed wasteful until contracts complete the road.

Vern Barnhart, shaken but alive, recalls being hit while cycling near the Payette river bridge on the way to work at the Garman orchard tract. A rear car blinded by headlights struck him, sending his bike into the ditch and the car into weeds as two vehicles passed. He was aided by another motorist and taken to Payette. injuries not serious but days needed before return to work. Rain from Wednesday into today dampens dust and affects crops.
