Portia Club Birthday Event Highlights Past Presidents

Portia Club marked its twenty eighth birthday with a luncheon in club rooms attended by about fifty members. Past Presidents from out of town were honored guests, with talks by nine former leaders recounting library support, bonds, and early Portia activities. The program included piano and vocal performances and a bridge-themed dictionary joke, ending with solos by Miss Nancy O Harris. Wilmington News notes a quiet marriage in Welser of Katherine Stirny to B Wilmington and upcoming move to Long View Washington.

Car Accident Near Payette Injures Car, No One Hurt

L. K. Ballenger and Rodney Shake picked up four stranded musicians near Fruitland on the way to Payette. A separate vehicle with several youths driving moonshine collided with the Baslinger car, causing damage but no injuries. Mrs. J. Springston and Mrs. Albert White were noted travelers with family visits in Seattle and San Francisco.

Armistice Day Observed In Payette With Country Band Parade

Armistice Day celebrations in Payette featured a parade led by Sheriff John T. Jefferis and Mayor J. R. Woodward, Civil War veterans, the Payette County Band, schoolchildren, ex-soldiers, and the American Legion. A Holy service at Christian church included Hon. Calvin Keller’s address on peace and patriotism, followed by a chicken banquet at the K P Hall and a final small parade.

Miss Lucile Laughrey and Mr. Oscar Grace united in marriage on November first at the Manse in Fullerton California. The bride is the daughter of Mr and Mrs W E Laughrey of Payette Idaho and the groom is the son of Mr and Mrs W N Grace of Payette Oregon Slope. Thirteen Million Marks Stamp Letter Sent Between Brothers

Antoniederichsen received a letter from his brother in Germany bearing six stamps of five million marks each, totaling thirty million marks. Before depreciation a German mark equaled 25 cents, so the stamps valued the letter at 1.5 million dollars prior to the war.

Crump Suffers Broken Ribs After Fall

Mr. R. A. Crump sustained several broken ribs from a fall last Friday while unloading fruit at the Denney packing house. He toppled from a wagon when the team moved, struck his side on timbers, and was treated at a doctor's office before returning home. He was seen in town Tuesday but not seeking any conflict or activity.

Landon Couple Headed to Fullerton for Winter Stay

Mr. and Mrs. D. Landon left Payette by auto Wednesday to spend the winter in Fullerton California. They may decide to settle permanently in southern California. Friends regret their departure but wish them success if they stay away.

Oregon Trail Set For All Year Open Route

The Old Oregon Trail Association announces the Oregon Trail will be kept open year round. Oregon's State Highway Commission plans to maintain the route across the Blue Mountains with two crews on the summit using caterpillar plows and snow fences at drift points.

State Commander Titus visits G. A. R. in Payette

State Commander Titus of Nampa spoke at the G. A. R. meeting held at Payette. Col. G. F. Thayer responded, followed by a W R C lunch and a talk to the Corps ladies. Three of the original 87 members remain, with poppies sold to aid the American Legion.

Payette girls Ula Hughes and Mildred Holmes, chosen to attend the University of Idaho chicken pie supper, were among the lucky ones. University boys keep perfect record in big game Boise trip

Fans crowded the streets and parades formed alongside the big game visit to Boise Saturday. The scene resembled a funeral for some, but many called it the finest parade in years as University teams maintained an undefeated record this year. Forty seven years since pioneer Bohart visit noted

Mr and Mrs W A Bohart of Eugene Oregon visited relatives in Payette Valley after traveling from Lewiston Maio and Kellon Utah where two daughters live. He recalls pioneer days and says little remains of old marks. They plan to stay through much of winter and enjoy the valley. Imported French Candles at Letson's.
