The Agriculture Department warns of a possible 1928 seed corn shortage due to holdovers from 1925 1926 and late 1927 crops. It urges farmers to plan now obtain seed from mature ears and store holdovers while ensuring proper drying and ventilation to prevent mold and loss of vigor.
Adelheid Godel, born April 20 1898 in Fayette county Illinois, died September 12 1927 at age 29 4 months 21 days. She married Jacob H Godel on July 7 1918 and they had three children Evelyn 8 Helen 5 and Adell Lorane 20 days. Funeral services were held at home and at Augsburg church with burial in Augsburg cemetery. She leaves her husband Jacob, three children, her parents Mr and Mrs Herman Krunegal, three sisters Leona Tarbeck Lena Knight Martha Bellhurst and three brothers Walter Andrew Erwine, plus in laws William Godel and wife.
About 55 students are enrolled this year with 20 freshmen 25 sophomores and 10 juniors. Mr. DeLay informed the Junior class that the weekly school news handed to the printer would count as a daily English grade.
The Marion County Farmers Institute meets in Patoka at the city park with a new building and large tent. Exhibits and premium lists highlight prizes for farm products. Speakers praised for their qualifications. Cow Calling Contest prize a Bell from Blue Valley Creamery. Attendees urged to participate and support local communities.
The Women Missionary Society of the M. E. Church South gathered Tuesday afternoon with good attendance. Talks on Home Missions Facing New Situations were led by Mrs. Ethel Rovier. Visitor Mrs Williams shared Africa pictures and curios. Next meeting will be at President Carrye Alexander's home on the third Tuesday in October.
A revival meeting is planned at Temple church four miles south of Patoka. It runs Monday night September 26 through Friday night September 30 for five nights. Everyone is invited. J. F. Rosborough.
The M E Annual Church Conference convened in Lebanon last week and closed Sunday with the pastor assignments listed for numerous churches including Alma, Altamont, Brownstown, Centralia Central City, Effingham, Greenville Centenary, Nashville First Methodist, and many others across Illinois. Names include C C Mays, F E Harris, W G Wigham, Glen Sharp, Ernest Shepherd, T B Sowers, O H Young, D A Tappmeyer, J F Kapp, and Mitzel among others.
Announcement on the street names B N Griffin as new Post Master to fill the vacancy left by J W Alexander with John A Jennines acting post master. Last examination candidates included B N Griffin Forrest Baxter and Mrs Mae Walker with Griffin's selection reported Wednesday for immediate effect. In Vandalia Ira D Lakin named to replace the late Harry Mabry promising a capable administration.
Charles Henniger of Vandalia and head of the Commercial Union visited Thursday to transfer his Insurance Company to the Superior, promising a strong membership boost. Eddie 4 Charles Adams and family of Catur spent over Sunday with relatives. Charles later moved to the Wabash three years ago and rose to Conductor in normal times. D C Wills of DuQuoin and a cousin of our linotype operator Donald Wilson paused Wednesday en route to the Dempsey Tunney fight in Chicago.
