Tragic California Grade Crossing Kills Meador Family

Mrs. Lem Meador and daughter Grace die when Grace Hoag’s car is struck by the Sunset Limited near Puente California. Also killed are the Meadors' relatives including Grace Hoag's grandmother and a minister. Coroner's inquest finds the train crew blameless. Bodies to be sent to Vernon and Illinois for burial. Bro Hoag accompanies the remains.

Car Crash Near West Ashley Wye Kills Girl and Injures Three

A noon Wednesday wreck near West Ashley Wye left Grace Stecher nine dead and her mother and two others seriously hurt. Mrs Irma Bates of Spar drove, lost control, car rolled over. the party was en route to the Du Quoin fair. An inquest returned an open verdict with no one held responsible.

Young Sandoval Girl Martha McIntire Dies at 17

Martha Mildred McIntire born August 4 1909 in Petersburg Indiana died September 5 1926 at Sandoval aged 17 years 1 month and 1 day. She was educated in Sandoval except for one term in Nason and hoped to finish high school this year. Funeral services were held September 7 at the Congregational Church in Sandoval conducted by Elders Henry and Larson of the LDS Church. Interment followed in Patoka. She leaves parents Mr and Mrs John McIntire four sisters Ada Hannah McIntire Mrs Geo Ahlf Boulder Colo Mrs George Anderson of Sandoval two brothers Wilbur of Patoka and Jesse of Nason plus many relatives and friends.

Prominent Young Couple Wed in Vandalia

Walter Wernsman and Edna Lawrence of Patoka township were married in Vandalia last Sunday afternoon with Rev. Reeter officiating. The bride, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Lawrence, is Vernon High School graduate and well regarded. The groom, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wernsman, is a prosperous young farmer from near Patoka. The Register joins well wishers in congratulating the couple.

News of the death of Hamp Betts, longtime County Clerk, reached Patoka Friday morning. Betts, reportedly in his usual health at 9, collapsed and died by 10:30 after months of ill health. His funeral is set for Sunday at 2 PM from the Presbyterian Church.
