Plans to check influenza epidemic discussed by Dr E D Jordan

Dr E D Jordan of Chicago told the American Public Health Association that preventing another influenza outbreak by quarantine and isolation is impractical on a world scale. He said face masks and chlorine gases offer limited value, and emphasis should be on reducing contact in small groups to lessen attack rates and virulence. Langtry Texas Loses Its Namesake Justice Roy Bean

Langtry, once Vinagaroon, will be abandoned as Southern Pacific builds a 14 mile cutoff that shortens the Los Angeles to New Orleans route by five miles. A new Langtry town will form on the cutoff while locals push to preserve Bean’s notorious courthouse as a small park. Bean governed with common sense justice and improvised trials, often during sessions held in his saloon with a drink nearby. The Jersey Lily Lily Langtry’s visit inspired the town’s renaming after Bean chose Langtry as the new name for the settlement.

He notes some value among the herd but most are small scrubby animals and suggests using them as fertilizer to free range for cattle with marketable value.
