A campaign pushes residents to vote for a state cash bonus for all who served in Illinois armed forces. Governor Green backs the plan, supported by veterans groups and Republican candidates. The issue requires a yes vote on a separate service recognition ballot to pass.
The piece defends a bonus measure, arguing it uses special taxes on detritus and race tracks to fund the bonus. It asserts Illinois state bonds carry property tax provisions but no state property tax has been levied in twelve years. Governor Green pledges no tax for the bonds. It urges a Yes vote on the Bonus and support for a Republican Congress candidate pledging to cut income taxes by twenty percent.
Sunday at the home of Mrs. C D Livesay included visits by Mr. and Mrs. C D Doolen who drove to St Louis Monday to take Dr. Glen Doolen to the train for his return to Denver Colo. Mr and Mrs Howard Pope and Mrs Allie Murfin of Decatur joined Mrs Emma Thompson and attended the funeral of Mrs Rose Doolen.
The Illinois Bonus Plan offers veterans ten dollars per month for each month served in the U S and fifteen dollars per month for service abroad. The plan guarantees a minimum of fifty dollars and a maximum of nine hundred dollars per veteran with an estimated average over four hundred dollars. Next of kin of each Illinoisan who died in service receives nine hundred dollars.
The text argues for approving a veterans bonus ballot titled Service Recognition Ballot. It accuses financiers of profiting during war and calls out opponents for demanding sacrifices while veterans deserve recognition. Voters are urged to support the measure on the ballot.
