Poultry growers urged to aid defense by expanding flocks
Marion County farmers are urged to aid the food for defense program and boost incomes by expanding flocks. The USDA targets a 15 percent rise in baby chicks and 10 percent in laying flocks over 15 months, with egg prices supported at about 22 cents a dozen and chickens at 15 cents a pound. Recommendations from Farm Adviser Blackburn emphasize breeding and management, including over-winter pullet retention or forced molt with rest before price increases, to sustain production and profits.
