Dean Martin to Open Martin Furniture Store in Sandoval

Dean Martin of Cox & Martin Funeral Home plans a private furniture business in Sandoval called the Martin Furniture Store. He has leased the Opp Building’s downstairs on the east side, which will be remodeled and redecorated for the venture. Miss Gladys Mc Clelland will run a thrift dress shop in the front half of the west side and assist part time in the new furniture business.

Patoka Grade School nets Edgewood tourney title

Patoka Grade School won first place at Edgewood Illinois in an 81 to 25 victory over Edgewood to cap a successful season. The squad defeated Sacred Hearts of Effingham 25 to 18 and Brownstown earlier. Coach Homer N Potts led Leighton Wasem Jimmie Wasem and Stephen to top scoring. The team finished 25 games 20 wins 5 losses with a strong fan base and a second place in the Southern Illinois District tournament at Sandoval.

Township Spelling Contest Set for March 20

The Township spelling contest will be held Saturday afternoon March 20 1948 at 1 30 p m at the listed schools. The committee will judge eligibility of contestants and each school may enter one pupil from grades one through eight who attended school in 1947 1948 and was not sixteen before January 1 1948. Eighth grade graduates are excluded.

The Sunbeam Class met at Mrs. P. J. Mojonnier's home on March 6 with Kent Crawford as president welcoming Mrs. Harold Snyder and family. Vera Nattier announced an April 3 party, and new officers were elected: President Wilma Perkins, Vice President Patsy Binnion, Secretary Janet Henry, Treasurer Vera Nattier. Refreshments included ice cream cookies candy and Easter eggs. Attendees listed include the Perkins, Snyder, Gerrish, Binnion, Henry, Nattier, Crawford and Mojonnier families along with Eldon Romack.

The Fancy Work Club met at Mrs. Leslie Wasem's home on March 6 with eleven members and one guest, Mrs. Roling. Members dressed as book titles, with E. L. DeLay winning first for Wings Over Jordan, and a luncheon hosted by the hostess and Mrs. Roling. The group plans to meet again in April with Mrs. Cleo Walker.

County nurse reports 146 adults were X-rayed in Patoka by the Mobil X-Ray Unit on Wednesday March 10. In Veron 65 people were X-rayed on Tuesday March 9. No children were X-rayed. overall result deemed satisfactory.

Inquest Held For Charles B. Anderson in Patoka

County coroner Robert Hancock of Salem conducted an inquest Thursday March 11 at 6 p.m. at Cox and Martin Funeral Home Patoka into the death of Charles B. Anderson of Patoka who died January 18 from a January 6 cay train collision accident in Patoka.

Robert Hays of Charles Henson Truck Company Centralia sustained a compound fracture of his left leg while unloading pipe from a freight car on the Illinois Central track in Patoka. He was transported by Cox and Martin ambulance to St Mary's hospital for treatment.
