Patoka plans a grand Fourth of July with fireworks displays, a Colt Show on June 27, and a county fair schedule. Community updates cover births, visits, marriages, and civic projects plus upcoming chautauqua and cannery work.
The Register carries Dr E Broomer of Centralia as a candidate for Coroner of Marion County. Though new to us, locals say he has served in that role, ran the office efficiently, and earned credit and satisfaction. A respected physician and honorable man, he is urged to Democratic readers to remember him at the August primary.
Vernon W C T U members observed Flower Mission Day with flowers and text cards for shut ins and an evening program. The program featured floral quotations biographical sketches and musical selections highlighting Jennie Cassedy and themes of womans progress.
Mrs Estella Waite press superintendent invites all mothers to join the discussion on The Curse of Rum at the upcoming meeting. The topic aims to engage mothers in community work and awareness efforts.
The White City Park in Centralia plans a large old fashioned fourth celebration with games races and prizes plus a grand fireworks display at night. Manager Hamilton organizes attractions including a figure eight skating period palace of mystery and merry go round with meals and soft drinks available. Also announced are wedding notices and local church events including a June 10 marriage at the Daily Graphic in Pine Bluffs Arkansas.
Colonel A C Matthews Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor died at his Pittsfield home on June 1. A Civil War veteran he served in the Ninety ninth Infantry, was elected captain and later appointed colonel. At death he was ex grand commander of the G A A of Illinois and was well known by Grand Army of the Republic members in the area after speaking at last fall's reunion.
A large Sunday service at Mound Chapel M. E. Church filled the building with 40:00 a. m. attendance. Rev. C. J. Pressly delivered the preparatory sermon and baptized 33 persons, 10 infants and 16 adults by immersion. 7 more adults were baptized in a pool. Twenty-six members were received in full connection. The pastor Rev. Willey is held in high esteem. The assembly was orderly and much appreciated.
