Friday night May 29 84 students received diplomas at Vandalia High School Commencement Exercises in the gym. Attending from Patoka vicinity were H Frank Crawford Jr Ruth Crawford Margaret Pauline Hayes Gayle Jones and Irene Varner.
A local editorial urges sustained leadership and mass cooperation to grow Patoka’s economy. It warns that buying outside the town drains money, depresses trade, raises taxes, and lowers property values, while supporting home merchants keeps money circulating and improves schools and streets.
The Philadelphia Phillies arrive in St Louis for a four game set at Sportsmen's Park starting Thursday. The series includes single games Thursday through Sunday with Saturday as Ladies Day and 2:30 pm starts. Chuck Klein returns after a Cubs trade as Jimmy Wilson’s club chases impact in the pennant race.
Patoka City Park hosts a series of games starting Monday June 15 with Giants versus Island Chapel and Zion against Cubs followed by Wednesday matchups including Tigers versus Island Chapel and Cubs versus Eaglin. Remaining fixtures list Cardinals Zion Giants Vernon Cubs Tigers and Island Chapel Eaglin with a note midweek date July 1 to be announced. Scores from May 25 show Giants 27 Eaglin 4 and Tigers 9 Zion 8.
The M E Church South Atoka and Be ae a Zion Church announce Sunday School at 9:30 and 10:00 respectively with preaching rounds at 10:45 and 11:00. Prayer meetings midweek. A day service with basket dinner at noon and a 1:30 baptismal service follows. Fourth Quarterly Conference set for June 20-21.

Christian Science Churches held a Lesson Sermon titled God the Only Cause and Creator with psalm and job citations and excerpts from Science and Health. The Golden Text spoke of help from the Lord and the Bible verses affirmed God as All-in-all and divine Principle. There will be no Women’s Club meeting this Saturday.
The Patoka Alumni Association held its Friday night meeting May 29 at the high school gym with over a hundred members and guests. Entertainment featured Jimmie and Dick and the Ozark Sweetheart of KMOX, followed by officer elections with Dean Martin as president and Florence Cain secretary.
Baccalaureate services for Salem high school graduates were held at the M E Church on May 31. Commencement exercises followed on June 2 at the same church. The school board hired L W Ballance to operate a bus. several graduates from the community completed their fourth year at Salem school. Members of the 1936 graduating class include Luther Ballance Gayle Belcher Paul Belcher Charles Berry Raymond Britt Mildred Carter Clifford Douthitt Pauline Klersteuber Mildred Logan Edwin Nattier Helen Nattier Violet Nattier.
The M E Church announces Sunday morning preaching at Arnold Chapel and a 1:00 p m union service at Zion M E South Church with a union baptism at Bielek's bridge east of Zion. Sunday School children's program at Patoka next Sunday morning. Vernon preaching at 7 30 p m with good crowds. pastor leaves June 14 for summer theology school, resuming regular schedule on the fourth Sunday.
Foster Township Sunday School Convention will be held at Arnold Chapel Church on Sunday June 21 1936. The program runs from 10:00 a m Sunday School and 11:00 a m Morning Worship with Rev Maurice Ballance, a noon basket dinner, then 2:00 p m music and song, 2:30 p m address by Rev E Mich els M E Pastor Shobonier, 3:00 p m talk by Rev M McKinney, Walton children selection Our Sunday School, 3:30 p m meditations by Mrs Nell Jones, superintendent reports, attendance award to Maurice Ballance, closing benediction.
Cubs and Giants played an eight inning contest Monday night before a large crowd. The Cubs won 13 to 11 after an unofficial box score caused contention about the runs. If this game affects the championship race it may be replayed.

An All Star Soft Ball game and drawing are set for Friday night at the Park. Girls play at 7 30 p m and All Stars vs Centralia at 8 30 p m. A drawing follows with many prizes. admission is 10 cents. Local merchants donate prizes with more to come at the next drawing.
The Bid a Bit Bridge Club of Vernon met Thursday at Miss Dot Doolen’s home with two tables in play. Andree Schroeder won high score and Thele Doolen earned consolation. Refreshments were served by the hostess with help from Mrs. Jess Doolen. Next meeting set for Thursday with Miss Thelma Doolen.
The May meeting at Mrs. Emma Smith's home featured a devotional, business session, and a Bible quiz arranged by Mrs. Elsie Gray, followed by refreshments. The June gathering at Mrs. Belle Willett's home included devotions by Mrs. Edna McGee, business, social time, and refreshments by Mrs. Willett and Mrs. Mae Simcox. The group will meet in July at Mrs. Elsie Gray's home.
Mr and Mrs Lester Ballance attended Southern Illinois Normal University graduation in Carbondale where their son Marvin Ballance earned a Bachelor of Education majoring in Mathematics with minors in Physics and Chemistry He served as feature writer for The Egyptian and participated in Little Theatre Tech Zetetic Society and clubs Debate Radio and Modern Problems Maurice Willis of Odin also graduated with a Bachelor of Education degree majoring in Music
Lyle Donald Green born in Kinmundy Illinois died suddenly Sunday about 12:30 pm while swimming near the new bridge east of Loma Montana. He had moved to Montana as a child and resided in Chouteau county near Loma. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:00 pm at the Luther Chapel conducted by Rev. Joe R. Benton. He is survived by his parents and two brothers Darrell and Dwight.
Mr and Mrs Leslie M Walker hosted a Sunday gathering May 31 at their Patoka area home in honor of relatives from Indianapolis Salem Casey and Clinton towns. Attendees included Mr and Mrs Charles Roth Mrs Oscar Singer Miss Virginia Singer Mr Garland Singer Mr and Mrs John F Hays Mr and Mrs Tom Stephens Mr and Mrs Forest Cothern and son Buddy Mr and Mrs Vinus Linton and daughters Lois and Donna and Mr and Mrs M D Warker and daughters Gladys Alavon Lorene Clyde and Maryin.
Mr and Mrs Wm Newman and Mrs J EB Evans Jr spent Saturday afternoon at the Dale Nattier home. Miss Helen Troversnert Sundey night and Monday in Sandoval as guest of Mrs Harold Simcox.
