Patoka Board outlines budget cuts after June election

The Patoka Community Unit School District Board on June 7 announced planned cuts to curb expenses following the June 3 vote. They will narrow bus routes, require students to buy all supplies, drop the Vernon Grade School addition, and consider joining grades under one teacher if needed to preserve state aid and educational standards. The board urged patron cooperation while noting levy increases require a new vote next year.

District 100 Rejects 0.40% Education Fund Increase

Voters in Unit School District 100 reject a 0.40 percentage point rise to the Educational fund rate. The old 1.00% rate has lasted twenty years. Vernon Grade School and Patoka Grade School hosted ballots with 15 Yes 175 No and 165 Yes 143 No respectively.

Sunbeam Picnic Draws 53 In Cold Park Rain

Despite heavy rain and cold weather, 53 people attended the fourth annual Sunbeam picnic at the park Saturday afternoon. Carl McDonald of Vandalia led songs on cornet with Rev. Carl Werb of Iuka, who also played duets and children's choruses. Attendees hailed from Decatur, Beaver Creek, Iuka, Odin, Vandalia and Patoka. Next picnic slated for August 10, 1951.

Pauline Sherman Pierson Dies in Illinois

Mrs. Pauline Sherman Pierson, formerly Pauline Sherman of Patoka, died June 1 in Cora Illinois after a period of ill health. She studied at Patoka High School class of 1904 and trained as a nurse at Brokaw Hospital Bloomington. She married Herbert Pierson and lived in Clearmont Montana before moving to Cora where she resided the past 25 years. Survived by her husband a daughter and twin sons.
