United States and Canada sign St Lawrence Seaway pact amid objections
The United States and Canada sign a broad framework for the St Lawrence Seaway costing about 800 million dollars. Ratification by Congress and Canadian Parliament is uncertain amid disputes over power division and water withdrawal from Lake Michigan. A Senate inquiry led by Senator Borah will start in August to study all aspects of the treaty.
