Special Election Here Tuesday For Peace Justices

Voters will go to the polls next Tuesday July 30 to elect two justices of the peace and two constables. The Republican caucus named two candidates and set the slate for the race.

Patoka Happenings and Local Visits Report Weekend

Local residents shared weekend visits with relatives in Irvington St Joseph and Decatur. Families including the Gergenis Hollands Ballances and Belchers were noted with travel to Colorado Springs Mobile and St Louis. A special election was held for justice of peace and constable posts due to qualification timing.

Sunbeams Plan Picnic at Park on August 15

The Sunbeams met at the Baptist Church on Saturday July 20 with president Connie Fiscus presiding. Connie Walker Sherry Thompson Patsy Sharp and others attended as Marianne Griffin called roll and read a Bible verse. Plans were made for an August 15 picnic at the park when Miss Craig of Vandalia will present a mission story and children are invited to dress as distant friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 p m Wednesday at Linton funeral home Kinmundy for Flora Griffin 81 a Foster Township resident who died Monday Burial was in Patoka Cemetery She is survived by three sons Marion and Lester Alma and Lee Patoka seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren

Officers of the Patoka Unit of the American Legion Auxiliary were installed at the Legion home on Thursday July 18. Installing officer was Ruth Wadkins former unit president. Electric Rates Found Fair in Investigation

A legislative committee reported no evidence southern Illinois electric rates were too high or deterred new industry. It found Illinois Power Company and Illinois Public Service not overearning relative to Commerce Commission findings, and bills in southern Illinois rose proportionally with other states.

Patient Rodger Gergeni recovers in St Louis hospital

Rodger Gergeni lies in a St Louis hospital after a bicycle accident while visiting relatives in St Joseph Missouri. He suffered three broken teeth and a broken jaw and was moved from a St Joseph hospital to the St Louis facility.

A large gathering from Vernon and nearby areas attended the Ehrat reunion at Augsburg Church with Rev Kenneth Ehrat delivering a sermon. Attendees included Rev Glen Ehrat, Rev Kenneth Ehrat’s family and relatives from Minnesota Iowa Illinois and Canada.

Final Band Concert of Season in Vernon Park

The last summer band concert will be held at Vernon Park on Thursday August 1. Warren Besing will conduct the local band for the final time before moving to Noble Illinois where he will oversee band music at Noble High and grade schools. Besing has directed Patoka’s band for three years and helped develop it. a new instructor will replace him.

Willing Workers Club Meeting With Lois Hill

Willing Workers Club met with Lois Hill and her daughter Lynn for their July gathering. A pot luck lunch was served after noon. The business session opened with the Lord's prayer recited by all. Amanda Thalman led the meeting in Kate Walker’s absence. Lois received many hostess gifts. Guests included Rose and Pearl Britt, Rita Hill, Mrs Halden Hill and daughter. The next meeting is planned with Juanita Snider in August.

Eastern Star Holds Stated Meeting Monday

The Eastern Star Chapter met for its regular Monday session with high attendance and several new members. After adjournment, members enjoyed homemade ice cream and cake in the dining room hosted by Mrs. Freda Meador and Mrs. Ruth Murfin. Friends from Massapequa, New York, visited Mr. and Mrs. Jack Matchett during the week, with Kathy staying on for several more weeks.

The Patoka 4-H Club met at the Griffin home with ten members two leaders and three guests. They reviewed the county fair held July 13 noting A ratings for nine members and B ratings for three, planning an ice cream supper for August 24 at Martin's parking lot.
