Booming Defense Leaves Many Idle

Work progress chief Howard C. Hunter in Washington warned that unemployment could reach about 5,500,000 in the new fiscal year starting July 1. Federal defense spending is expected to cut the jobless by 1,500,000, even as nonagricultural employment hits a record 37,617,000 with defense industries employing over 2,000,000. The total payroll stands at 47,732,000, just 2,267,000 below 1929 levels, due to seven million new entrants to the labor force since those boom years. The director of federal work relief suggested 1941 may surpass 1929 figures if wages stay high and more workers become available.
