Marketing of Live Stock Shows Increase in 1940
Marketings of livestock rose in 1940 with the American meat packing industry paying about 100 million dollars more for livestock than in 1939. George A. Schmidt, chairman of the American Meat Institute, announced in the institute’s annual statement on the meat trade. Hog marketings in the last quarter were the greatest on record for that period and other classes remained strong. Despite high meat production, livestock and meat prices were still somewhat higher than a year earlier as consumer interest and buying power grew, though wholesale prices for some cuts declined from last fall’s peak.
