Sailor Lloyd Sanders Sends Christmas Greeting From Southwest Pacific

In a January 6 letter from the Southwest Pacific, Lloyd L. Sanders writes home to Mrs. Mamie Sanders of Salem Illinois describing a Christmas gathering aboard a navy ship. He notes carols on deck, Coca-Cola, a handmade cardboard tree, and a Santa suit provided by the ship’s doctor as the crew observes Christmas far from home during wartime.

The mother before marriage was Miss Cathrine Payne. Cpl Walter Kirk left Sunday for a camp in Arkansas after a furlough with friends.

The Patoka Farmers Co-Op Elevator Company held its annual banquet Tuesday night January 9 at the Legion Hall in Patoka. The event opened with a silent prayer for soldiers, finished with prayer by Philip Mojonnier, and featured foods, games, and singing attended by numerous local couples and families from Vernon and surrounding areas.

First State Bank Holds Annual Meeting

The First State Bank of Patoka re elected the same officers and directors for the coming year. Directors include P. J. Mojonnier Fred Brown T. E. Irvin C. M. Rogier D. F. Blankenship William J. Schroeder and L. E. Green. Officers are P. J. Mojonnier president Fred Brown vice president L. E. Green cashier and Mae Eagan assistant cashier. A good financial year was reported with a substantial gain in deposits. The bank building and fixtures costing 20000 in 1988 were charged off to 2.00. The interior will be redecorated and John Wilson engaged for the job.

Sgt Paul K Spurgeon son of Mr and Mrs S M Spurgeon of Patoka was killed in action December 13 1944 in France while serving with the 397th Infantry Regiment of the 100th Division on the U S Seventh Army front. The family had earlier received notice of missing status.

Joliet wedding of Charlotte Klockenbusch and Wilbur Chandler

Miss Charlotte Marie Klockenbusch and Wilbur Frank Chandler wed at St. Peter's Lutheran Joliet on December 17 1944. The ceremony featured a double ring service with organ music and floral gowns. Afterward the couple dined at the Woodruff hotel and planned a two week trip before heading to San Diego where Chandler is stationed with the Navy.
