Milk Local of SMP schedules annual meetings in January

Sanitary Milk Producers locals in Missouri and Illinois plan annual meetings to elect officers and delegates. Dates include Patoka January 9 at 7:30 p m and Vandalia January 12 Court House, Mulberry Grove January 7, Ramsey January 14. A report by M E Bone on 1936 activities will be presented.

Patoka Forms Auxiliary Unit With Local Ladies

Twelve ladies met at Harriet Meador’s home on December 10 1936 to organize an auxiliary for Edgar R Rogier Post 543 Mt Vernon District Director Ruth Allen and Queen of Centralia aided. Officers elected for the year Clara Weinsman president Dot Doolen first vice president Isabel Protz treasurer Wilma Rogier chaplain Nellie Adams sear at arms Bertha Miller historian. A joint Legion and Auxiliary meeting is scheduled January 7 with invitation to all eligible members and families.

Funeral Service for Mrs Ida Melhord Held in Patoka

Mrs Ida Melhord of 268 South Broadway Decatur Illinois died December 25 1986 after a three month illness. The body was moved to Moran's funeral parlors then to Patoka for burial Sunday afternoon. She was born October 14 1866 aged 70 and left a daughter Lehita Vredenburgh two sisters and three brothers. Funeral services conducted at M E Church South at 1 PM with Rev J M Smith officiating. Interment in Patoka Cemetery. Many relatives from out of town attended including Walton Cruse Livesay Jett Pugh Rippey Tate and others from Decatur Clinton Sandoval Centralia Nashville Chicago and Fulton Missouri.

Drilling Starts on Merryman Farm North of Patoka

Drilling has begun on the Merryman farm one mile north of Patoka as part of a three-well program. The shallow wells aim to reach oil sands at about two thousand feet if needed, with potential deeper testing depending on early results. Local interest centers on a conclusive deep test to indicate a rich pool in southern Illinois and potential economic benefits for the area.

Centralia Holiday Party Hosts Monopoly and Dance Night

Bob Adams, son of Mr and Mrs Prank Adams, checked into St Marys Hospital Centralia Friday for a minor throat operation and was discharged Sunday with daily treatments needed. A party at Miss Lola Belle Moreys home featured Monopoly, cards and dancing with many local youths in attendance.

Christmas Buffet Supper Hosts in Vanderburgh Family

Mr and Mrs Oral Walker of Vanderburgh entertained Mrs Walkers family at a Christmas night buffet. Attendees included H W Walker Marieell Fields Mary Merryman Charles Patoka Robert Walker from Chicago and Wayne Campbell Decatur. Hillard Blalock and Alice Anderson visited relatives nearby.

Mr and Mrs S E Altom hosted Christmas dinner for the Altom family and relatives. A noon meal featured two browned turkeys and trimmings. The gathering marked Mrs Josie Vallow s birthday and included a $75 check from Jesse Vallow in Los Angeles. Attendees included multiple Altoms and Crawford and Pugh families from Centralia Clinton and nearby.

Sunday School Bid Farewell Party and Shower

The M. E. Sunday School held a combined farewell for Mrs. J. R. Wasem who leaves Friday for Miami Florida and a Christmas shower for Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jennings of St. Louis. Helen Troyer and Mae Eagan led entertainment with musical readings. Mrs. A. T. Gray presented a poem and gifts. Prizes went to Mrs. John A. Jennings Rev. C. J. Piland and Miss Bettie Simcox.

A large crowd gathered Saturday at the Brumfields home west of town to give the newlywed couple Wayne and his wife an old fashioned charivari. Wayne is home from a CCC camp in the northern part of the state for the holidays.

The annual program by the Christian church youth under Mrs. W. E. Field drew a good crowd Thursday evening. Performances were well received and children received gifts. Sunday School was treated and many stockings were filled.

Teo Chandler Visits Patoka From Bearrington

Teo Chandler of Bearrington and his mother Mrs Addie Chandler visited Patoka for Christmas. He works at Pomeroo Farms in northern Illinois where he manages nine fine bred horses. The party toured the Centennial Exposition facilities and attended the show star event.

Flint man struck by auto leaves him hospitalized

Jack Eagan of Flint Mich was hit by an automobile near his home and rendered unconscious for hours. He was taken to a hospital for treatment and will be out for several weeks before returning to his job at the Chevrolet factory. He is the son of Mrs M Eagan of Patoka.

James Riley Carter born June 30 1857 in Clinton County died December 2 1936 at his home in Patoka age 79 years 5 months 2 days He married Alice Wood in 1880 who died in 1909 They had eight children four sons Clyde Alvin Harry Wilbur Norman and four daughters Mrs C H Gentry Mrs P W Roy Mrs J L Stastic and others He later married Mrs Jenkins McHaney in 1910 He was a deacon for about 45 years a life member of the State Baptist association and served on the missions board He leaves a wife six children fourteen grandchildren and several relatives Funeral December 4 at Patoka Baptist Church Burial at Sandoval cemetery
