Telephone Birthdays Mark 70 Years Since Bell Link
The telephone industry celebrates its seventh birthday this March 10 1946. Bell’s attic message in 1876 started it all, evolving from a crude device to the modern telephone. Independent companies, whose patents expired in 1894, propelled key advances including the dial system. By 1909 the dial telephone spread widely in major cities. Today about half of U S telephones are dial operated with over 6000 independents serving 2000 communities and one fifth of all telephones.
