Obituary for John William Bates of Shobonier Illinois

John William Bates 71 years old died near Bhpenntee on February 8 1938 after a life in Illinois Missouri and Kansas. He married Margaret June 26 1918 and settled in Shobonier Illinois where he lived until death. Survived by sister Mrs Emma Star Edina Missouri and many nieces nephews and friends. Funeral services were held January 10 1938 at St Marys Catholic Church with interment Vernon Cemetery. Rev Striplin officiating.

Joliet Develops Its Arboretum

Joliet expands its Arboretum at Pilcher Park adding magnolia sweet gum cypress pecan black birch and black cherry among the trees. John Higginbotham originally owned the 327 acre tract once known as the Forest of Arden. The area will see imports from around the world as researchers from the Federal Writers Project study Joliet for a city guide. A five acre picnic camp lies across Hickory Creek linked by a footbridge with a flowing well fed from Lake Michigan among the features.

Golden Gloves Tourney Finals Set for Monday Night

The Southern Illinois Golden Gloves tournament opened in Centralia with 19 bouts on Monday and 18 on Tuesday. Contests spanned bantam to heavyweight, with many bouts praised for scientific boxing and knockouts. Good sportsmanship marked the two-night event.

Library Board to Meet for Officer Elections

The library Board of Directors will meet at 7:00 p m on February 18 at the Library to elect officers. Mrs J L Simcox and Miss Jaanita Easton assist with evening hours, while about 150 people currently read books. A donation of books or magazines is welcome. Sixty books come from the State Library and may be kept until April 15. Mrs J L Simcox is president and Mrs P J Majonnier is secretary.

Workmen Begin Foundations for C. D. Martin Store Building

Work started last Thursday on the foundation for the Martin Cash Store building on the town's west side. Rapid progress leveled ground for the floor and laid foundations before colder weather halted work this week. The store now occupies the east side until the new building on the ing is erected.

S L Bundy of Kinmundy died at Effingham hospital after several days of illness. Funeral services were held Friday in Kinmundy and the body sent to Wyoming for burial. Attending from here were Mrs Gilla Hopkins, Mr and Mrs Clark Simcox, Mr and Mrs Jarks Wasem and Claude Walker.

Early Illinois Settlers Battle Prairie Bandits in 1841

The Rock River Valley markings recount prairie bandits terrorizing Ogle Whiteside and Winnebago counties circa 1840 41. John Campbell of Ogle led Regulators defending order but was killed in June 1841. the group captured and hanged some bandits after a jury trial.
