A Tuesday morning blaze at John and Clara Moran’s home triggered a full community response. Residents, armed with quirt guns and buckets, rushed to the scene but the smoke proved to be only a flue fire, not a building blaze, sparking relief as the alarm cleared.
Last week saw 41 bank failures reversed, below the prior week’s 52 and far from the 70 from a year ago. January totals reach 227 with 362 in the previous year, while nonbank commercial failures approach 700. Also notes a birth on Money night February 6, a baby girl to Jess Jones and wife.
A four year old son of Mr and Mrs Clarence Bowen died Tuesday with funeral held Wednesday. Homer Gerald Bowen born June 28 1929 near Patoka died Feb 6 1983 at age 8 years 7 months 8 days. Services conducted by Rev J M Smith at Temple Church burial in Temple cemetery. Mrs Lola Gerrish burial held Thursday after shipment from St Louis. Louis Linton, once in serious condition at St Mary's Hospital, died Monday night with funeral Thursday morning.
Neighbors and friends gathered at Mrs Eliza Farmer home to mark her eighty seventh birthday with a noon pot luck meal and a large eighty seven candle cake. Twenty three guests attended due to bad weather and left with gifts and warm wishes for many returns of the day.
The Pentecostal revival began a week ago with Miss Isabelle Flowers and Myrtle Crevoisier as Evangelist and Soloist and progresses nicely. The hall fills nightly except Saturday when cold weather kept it sparse. Sunday night Flowers preached on The Waters of Life contrasting a cistern and a fountain and urged a fountain experience that flows pure water and life. Special songs by Sister Crevoisier drew audience attention.
A county court in Marion County was sued for nine thousand dollars by James Bros merchants of Salem and over one thousand dollars by a Bloomington printing company. The decision totals reflect large claims against the county with mixed endorsements.
Two of Rollin Coxs children were burned last Saturday when the youngest sparked a blaze and the older child tried to extinguish it. The youngest child is listed in serious condition.
The February meeting of all Rebekah lodges in Marion County will be held in Patoka on Wednesday night February 15. A large attendance is desired.
Warren Junkerman 37, longtime Centralia resident and Sandoval area drug clerk, died in a late Sunday automobile crash near Fairy Dell. Witness Clarence Woods pursued the car after concerns about its operation. Junkerman’s car overturned, he was rushed to St Marys Hospital where physicians ruled neck broken. An inquest by Coroner Carrigan offered no explanation for his odd behavior before the crash. Junkerman had worked at Greer Drug, Hart’s Pharmacy, and recently was unemployed. his wife and parents reside in Centralia.
George Ray of Centralia is elevated to Superintendent at State Farm with Fred Hanks as assistant. Blanche Pugh acts as hostess at the executive mansion, replacing the former arrangement. Wages set at 4500 dollars yearly with family maintenance, guards starting 90 dollars monthly rising to 160, all in state civil service.

Jimmy Cahill now in Weiser Idaho reviews winter stock feeding profits. He bought steers for 2948 dollars and sold them for 3545 with losses on one steer. He fed 50 tons alfalfa and 15 tons grain, valued at 460 dollars plus 142 wages. Steers weighed about 900 pounds. Cahill plans to feed hogs with 1000 bushels of corn and barley. his brother John has 50 head. they expect double return on grain feed.
Emma Mandrel daughter of Henry and Betty Mandrel born May 14 1848 died Feb 1 1935 aged 84 8 18 united in marriage to Joseph Wall three children died in infancy husband preceded her 15 years ago. Taken in as own child Murl Lee step son Will Wall and step grandsons Floyd Wall Ancie Wall. Health failed five years ago she stayed at J A Shep home with Miss Bessie Stark aiding her. Three men robbed the Texico State Bank near Dix in Jefferson County at 2 am. The thieves escaped in a small car after a low disturbance. Cash about 4045 was taken. cash guarded by insurance. The cashier knew the suspects, who were identified at a farmhouse before fleeing along the Marlow road. Local farmer was shot at while trying to call for help. Authorities promise arrests soon.

Very cold weather forces a postponement of Her Honor the Mayor to next Thursday night February 16. Reserve tickets will be honored on the new date.
The National Council of Women named twelve prominent women from the last century based on votes by 128,882 women. Mary Baker Eddy led with 102,762 votes followed by Jane Addams, Clara Barton, Frances Willard, Susan B. Anthony, Helen Keller, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Julia Ward Howe, Carrie Chapman Catt, Amelia Earhart Putman, Mary Lyon, and Dr. Mary E. Woolley. Their portraits will grace a frieze at the Chicago World Fair social science building.
