Christmas Home Visits Fill Patoka With Guests
Numerous Patoka families hosted relatives from nearby towns during Christmas. Visitors included Bill Eagan and kin from Decatur, Ruth Coleman of Chicago, and groups from Granite City and Kinmundy. Local residents like Junior Walker, Orville Sharp, and Darvin Jones returned from travels, as did Henne, Belcher, and many others for holiday gatherings, meals, and informal get togethers.
Trap and Mouse Poem of Mercy and Resolve
A narrator set a spring trap for a mouse, observed its death, and expresses sorrow. The speaker vows never to trap again, choosing to spare mice henceforth, and signs as Patsy Spurgeon. The piece reflects remorse after an unintended kill and a pledge of gentleness.

Maurice Willis visits with Ballance and Pugh families in St Louis and Chicago. Mrs Barthol Anderson returns from Giver Hospital where she received treatment. Bruce Quayle, U S Army, stationed at Jefferson Barracks, spent Christmas with his mother. Mr and Mrs Jim Thompson visit Maron. George Wasem family visit Pittsburg with Wasem’s in‑laws. Dean Wilon of Flint, Mich visits aunt and uncle en route to DuQoin. Centralia visitors include Mrs C N Truse, Mrs Howard Smith and others. Miss Alice Murfin spends Christmas in Clinton with relatives.

Scholarships Offered for Illinois Youth Poultry Essay Contest
Marion Coney noye and girls are eligible to win two scholarships to the College of Agriculture at the University of Illinois, valued at 200 and 100 dollars. Sponsored by the Illinois Poultry Industry Council for the Seventh World's Poultry Congress, the awards are for essays up to 500 words on poultry economy or diet benefits. Entrants must be sponsored by a Seventh World Poultry Congress member and submit by April 15, 1939.

National Women's Advisory Committee for 1939 World's Fair
Mrs. Vincent Astor is named chairman of the National Women's Advisory Committee for the 1939 New York World's Fair. Winthrop W. Aldrich of Chase National Bank chairs the men's National Committee. Over 10,000 committee workers will mobilize a nationwide campaign to build support and active state participation. Patoka Field Production Sliced In Half
The Ohio Oil Company notified Patoka pool producers that it would buy only 50 percent of November crude starting immediately until further notice. The curtailment follows Texas Co and Imperial Oil Co reducing purchases from Illinois Pipe Line Co due to higher output in nearby fields.

Oil Field Worker Burns In Rig Fire At St Elmo
Connor Moore of Taylor Drilling Co was critically burned Tuesday at St Elmo while working on a company rig. He wore oil soaked clothing and flames melted boots and burned from waist to feet, two bystanders smothering flames. He is in Centralia hospital in critical condition.

The D D Club gathered December 23 at Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Mojonnier’s home despite bad roads. Officers elected included Carroll Mojonnier as president Orville Genre secretary Homer Outhouse treasurer and Mrs Homer Outhouse correspondent. The group voted a three dollar donation to the Chicago Christmas Neighbors club.

Local Boy Weds Vernon Girl in December Nuptials
Tiayne Ellis, son of Mr and Mrs G A Ellis, marries Miss Lora Wilson of Vernon at St Charles Missouri. Attendants were Lois Lawrence from Centralia and Francis Belcher from Patoka. The bride, active in Vernon, finished Vernon High School. groom, well regarded in his community, attended Centralia schools and worked for Illinois Central Railroad in the northern part of the state. They plan to reside temporarily in Vernon.
