Tornado Outbreak Damages Property Near Patoka Area

A line of tornadic winds last Wednesday ripped shingles from the James Wernsman home and shifted the M. Eyman farm house six inches on its foundation. Barns and outbuildings were destroyed or badly damaged at Caudle and Eyman farms as Murphysboro and Mt. Vernon area homes faced destruction and area floods covered Highway 51 south of town.

Vernon farmer buys Forney Air-Coupe aircraft

Harry Perkins of Vernon, described as a flying farmer, recently purchased a Forney Air-Coupe and stores it at Salem airport. He intends to build a hangar on his farm east of Vernon in the spring to house the new plane.

Illinois Power seeks rate change in Illinois service

Public notice states Illinois Power Company filed with the Illinois Commerce Commission a proposed schedule change raising electric rates for residential commercial and industrial customers and eliminating the contract term discount for park and sanitary districts. A copy of the proposal is available at company offices and inquiries may be directed to the ICC in Springfield Illinois.

Home Bureau Christmas Party Held at Christian Church

The Patoka Home Bureau unit gathered Friday at the Christian Church for its annual Christmas party. Decorations, a turkey dinner served by hostesses Mrs. Gale Walker and Mrs. Winnie Spurgeon, and a short business meeting followed by games led to prize awards for several members. Mrs. Margaret Cox received a gift for her 1957 chairmanship. Mrs. Grant Hawkins attended with her baby daughter.

New Farm Corn Allotment Applications Urged

ASC Chairman Cecil L Kell announces that any producer planning to plant corn in 1958 on a farm with no corn acreage in 1955 56 or 57 must apply for a corn allotment to access price support. Quotas do not apply to corn but non allotment could make 1958 corn ineligible for price support and Wheat Soil Bank. New corn farms cannot join the corn acreage reserve. Applications are at the ASC county office with a deadline of January 31 1958.

Santa visits 275 children in Patioka hosted by fire dept

About 275 youngsters lined up Saturday for the annual pre Christmas visit of Santa Claus in Patioka sponsored by the fire department. Firefighters handed out candy apples and oranges and Santa mingled with the crowd taking last minute requests. The department still seeks donations to fund the event and asks contributors to send checks to the fire department.

Mrs Rose Thomas 77 Dies in Macon Eastern Star Home

Mrs Rose Thomas 77 died Sunday at 6 am in the Eastern Star Home Macon. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 pm at Cox Martin funeral home with Rev George Potter officiating and burial in Pratt cemetery. Born June 6 1880 in Marilon county she was a former Patoka Vernon resident and widow of Nathaniel George Thomas.

Christmas Party for Sunbeams at Baptist Church

Salem Salvation Army Delivers 114 Christmas Baskets

Envoy Harold Currier and assistants gave 114 food baskets to needy families as Salem Salvation Army wrapped Christmas activities. The Tree of Lights raised $849.96 toward a $1,000 goal, funding the season's programs across Marion County and nearby towns.

Warriors end cellar in Farina tourney loss and consolation win

The Warriors opened with a 63 451 loss to Kinmundy in the Farina blind basketball tourney consolation round. Ramsey beat Farina 63 59 while Kinmundy defeated Ramsey 60 54 in the final. Lou Bates Injured in Farm Accident Near Patoka

Lou Bates Sr. was severely injured Monday while repairing a corn grinding belt east of town. He was thrown by the belt and received multiple injuries. He was taken to the doctor in Patoka, then to St Marys hospital in Centralia, where he was reported to be responding to treatment but facing a long recovery.

Frail Mrs Ferne Gehrken fell injuring her wrist and was admitted to Fayette County Hospital for the night.
