Air Force enlistees signed before Christmas may stay home until January 2, 1957 under the Special Christmas Enlistment Program. Funeral services were held for Ira Grover Caldwell 73 at Coxamids Martin funeral home. He died Monday at 6 30 a m after a year long illness at his Patoka home. Rev Grant Hawkins presided and burial followed in Patoka Cemetery. Caldwell a lifelong Patoka resident and retired carpenter is survived by two sons Robert of Ft Lauderdale Florida and Gilbert of Patoka two sisters Stella Laswell Alma and Alice Caldwell Decatur and two grandchildren.
The Pre-school Sunbeam group gathered Saturday afternoon at the Baptist church with Marianne Griffen as president naming Leslie Talbot to call the violin and children singing God Is Love. The next gathering is December 15 with nibble nook duties by Mrs Mojonnier and January 5 by Mrs Cecile Brown. The group plans to remember shut in folks by collecting cookies chewing gum candy fruit for Christmas. The lesson focuses on Sharing and refreshments included Kool-Aid and ice cream chairs.

The Illinois Agricultural Association backs the Soil Bank Corn Base Acreage plan for the December 11 corn referendum. IAA president Otto Steffey says the base protects Illinois corn farmers and keeps production in the corn belt. Mayfield urges county Farm Bureaus to mobilize a strong voter turnout and explain the referendum.

Mr and Mrs Darrell Sharp announce the birth of a baby girl on Thursday December 8 at 4 27 am at St Marys Hospital. The child weighed 8 pounds 8 ounces.
Mrs. Lloyd Cooper of Patoka underwent major surgery at Fayette County hospital Vandalia Friday morning November 30 and is reported improving. Visitors include Julius Wagner Rockford and Linda Edwards Boulder to Mrs Frank Heinzmann. Betty Jones and Eleanor Easton visit W C Livesay in hospital in St Louis.
Mrs Harold Cain hosted a pink and blue baby shower at her Patoka area home on November 28 honoring Mrs Gale Cooper. A bassinet centerpiece held gifts and nursery decor filled the rooms. Prizes went to Mrs Tom Cox Mrs Cecil Alexander Mrs Dean Lawrence and Mrs Wilson Laux. Refreshments included fruit salad angel food cake mints coffee and cocoa.
Voters in Community Consolidated School District No. 9 approved a $48,000 bond for a new three room school with cafeteria located about one mile east of Route 61 on Predomiia blacktop. Construction starts spring for use by September 1957.

Samuel W. Arnold 81 was found dead by his daughter Mrs. E E Lange on the back porch of her home Tuesday morning about 10 30. A lifelong resident and retired farmer he lived with his daughter in normal most years. Funeral services were held Thursday from Cox Martin funeral home at 1 30 p m with Rev Cecil Lowe officiating. Burial in Sandy Branch Cemetery. He was born March 22 1875 in Foster township son of James Wesley and Permelia Jane Robb Arnold. Survived by two sons Dale Normal and Arthur W Bon Alton and four daughters Doris Jones Normal Thelma Eschenbach Hammond Ind Alice Lange Patoka and Ora Colville Rockford seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Operation of the University of Illinois cost the average taxpayer of the state little more than a penny a day during the past year.
Santa Claus will visit Patoka Saturday December 22 under the Patoka volunteer fire department sponsorship. The department will prepare goodies for delivery to local children and requests donations to any member or at Schroeder Motor Company. Orville Schroeder the fire chief urged liberal contributions from area residents.

Several local residents including Robert Norris, Mr and Mrs E L Norris, and Miss Letta Hopkins appear in various social calls and events.
