Women Open Foreign Service Posts on Merit Basis
Washington reports Miss Pattie Hockaday Field of Denver is named vice consul at Amsterdam and Miss Lucille Ackerson of Ohio as attaché to the Berne legation. The Rogers bill shifts appointments to merit, ending old political vetting and expanding opportunities for educated young women in diplomacy. Miss Ackerson led competitive exams after three years in the State Department. Field was one of twenty successful candidates from 150.
