Thanksgiving fundraiser supports cemetery fund

The community table last week netted $345 for the cemetery fund. Organizers credit the public for food donations time and cash and thank those who could not attend but sent gifts. Dishes from the dinner are at the home of Mr and Mrs P J Mojonnier.

Mr and Mrs Darrel Chriss moved to a new home north of town at the corner of Highway 51 and Black Top road. A house warming party Monday night drew relatives and friends who brought gifts and enjoyed sandwiches and soft drinks.

Victoria Chapter OES Honors Retiring Leaders

Vesper Vincent Alexander born January 23 1893 in Patoka Illinois died November 21 1950 aged 57 years 9 months 29 days. Survived by two daughters Waneta Sorak and Mary Catherine Gammill of Chicago a step daughter Ethel Wakefield of Hazel Crest and a son predeceased. Burial at Peaceful Valley Odin. Funeral held November 24 in Sandoval with Rev N A Kahl. He served in World War I with the 14th Company 161st Depot Brigade and 498 Air Squadron.

Eastern Star initiates three at Patoka hall

In a Saturday evening ceremony at the Masonic hall in Patoka Victoria Chapter Order of Eastern Star admitted three new members. Worthy Matron Mrs Laurena Christian presided with officers including Mrs Ruth Alexander of Sandoval as organist. Guests from Sandoval and Centralia attended and a social hour followed with refreshments.

Eaglin Neighbors Club Meets Edith Thalman

The Eaglin Neighbors Club gathered with Edith Thalman to sew a quilt and mend rags. Members planned a Christmas gathering and a candy exchange, with 50 cents for members and 29 cents for kiddies. The couple born 1874 and 1875 remain in good health active in church life with five children ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Mattoon Indian baseball manager Chuck Hawley underwent knee surgery and remains a patient at Terre Haute Union Hospital under a bone specialist. He has battled injury troubles for several years and is now recovering after the operation.

Odin Woman Dies In Blaze At Home

Mrs Eva Denman 79 perished in a fire that destroyed her Odin residence Saturday afternoon. The two story house burned rapidly in strong winds. she left two front rooms and was found in the basement near electrical wires. Coroner’s jury ruled accidental burns. She lived in Odin all her life with surviving sister Della Underhill and brother Herman Hoskinson. Funeral held November 28 at Odin Christian church.
