The community table last week netted $345 for the cemetery fund. Organizers credit the public for food donations time and cash and thank those who could not attend but sent gifts. Dishes from the dinner are at the home of Mr and Mrs P J Mojonnier.
Mr and Mrs Darrel Chriss moved to a new home north of town at the corner of Highway 51 and Black Top road. A house warming party Monday night drew relatives and friends who brought gifts and enjoyed sandwiches and soft drinks.
Mrs Laurina Christian and Artie Rogier were honored at a candlelight service with gifts. Victoria Chapter OES plans a public officer installation on December 8 at 8 o clock naming Andree Schroeder Clem Doolen and others to roles. Officers and attendees listed include Laurina Christian Winnifred Spurgeon Rita Hill Everett Merryman Martha Rogier and more.
Veterans with worsening service connected conditions can apply to raise their disability rating. Officials note many claims are currently zero percent and require medical evidence. If evidence supports, an examination may be authorized, with service officers providing help through the Illinois Veterans Commission.
Vesper Vincent Alexander born January 23 1893 in Patoka Illinois died November 21 1950 aged 57 years 9 months 29 days. Survived by two daughters Waneta Sorak and Mary Catherine Gammill of Chicago a step daughter Ethel Wakefield of Hazel Crest and a son predeceased. Burial at Peaceful Valley Odin. Funeral held November 24 in Sandoval with Rev N A Kahl. He served in World War I with the 14th Company 161st Depot Brigade and 498 Air Squadron.
The Sunbeams hold a Christmas party December 2 from 2 to 3 PM at Mrs. P. J. Mojonnier’s home. The program includes welcomes, flag salutes, prayers and Bible verses, an acrostic spelling December, a playlet The Wise Men, and closing prayers with group games.
Expresses sincere thanks to all who remembered the writer during hospitalization and after returning home. Wishes God’s blessings on each person.
Lillie Ann Prather 80 died Friday at Poole Nursing Home Odin born December 23 1869 to David Blair and Sarah Morton Blair. Survived by son Joe Prather of Chicago stepson and granddaughter Mrs Doris Madden of Sandoval. Body from Cox and Martin Funeral Home Sandoval to Romine Presbyterian Church Kell officiated. Interment Covenator Cemetery near Walnut Hill.
Mr and Mrs Clif Christian and family visited Mr and Mrs Martin Dudley and daughter Gaila in Nashville for Thanksgiving. Mr and Mrs Ray Outhouse welcomed a 10 pound son born November 25 in Chillicothe I. Clifford Talbot of Decatur stayed with his parents Mr and Mrs L W Ballance in Sandoval and relatives. Leosedoe Valdenko of Tonica spent the weekend here.
In a Saturday evening ceremony at the Masonic hall in Patoka Victoria Chapter Order of Eastern Star admitted three new members. Worthy Matron Mrs Laurena Christian presided with officers including Mrs Ruth Alexander of Sandoval as organist. Guests from Sandoval and Centralia attended and a social hour followed with refreshments.
The Eaglin Neighbors Club gathered with Edith Thalman to sew a quilt and mend rags. Members planned a Christmas gathering and a candy exchange, with 50 cents for members and 29 cents for kiddies. The next meeting is set for December 14 at Doris Britts, with a dinner later hosted for Jackie Thalman and others.
Melvin E Sprinkle 81 of Pana former Vernon resident died recently. Funeral services conducted by Rev Brick at McCrackin Funeral Home Pana with interment Vandalia Cemetery. Survived by wife Lola P Sprinkle and ten children Henry Wallace Dowie Catherine Mae Cathern Orlie Mollie Hatch Myrtle Gillibrand Eugene Catherine. Friends from Vernon attended.
Mrs. Les Griffin thanks friends for kind cards and thoughtful flowers and a pretty card received during a recent hospital stay from the Willing Workers Class and all who sent best wishes.
A long list of residents and relatives returns to the old town for Thanksgiving dinner. Names appear from Albion Vandalia Centralia St. Louis Tonica Effingham Shobonier Sandoval and Vernon, with several family groups noted.
Sunday School led by Lyle Arnold with 18 in morning worship led by Paul Brown. Guest minister Charles Ice delivered the sermon. Birthday song for Mildred G Belcher. Weather cold wave noted and attendance affected.
Mr and Mrs Pete Bopp celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary on Wednesday November 29 1950 at their farm home south of Patoka and north of Fairman. They have lived there 38 years and two of their children attended with others visiting. The couple born 1874 and 1875 remain in good health active in church life with five children ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
The regular Patoka P.T.C. meeting will be held at the gymnasium on Friday evening December 1 at 7 30 oclock. All members are urged to attend.
Frank Ellifritz brought in a notably contorted sweet potato this week that resembled a weasel from afar. The unusual vegetable drew curiosity for its irregular shape and size.
Miss Marnell Pursley of Odin became the bride of Robert Joe Hornden of Salem in a Thursday evening ceremony at the Assembly of God Church in Odin. The Rev. Florence Boucher officiated. The bride wore aqua wool with a red rose corsage. The bride is Odin High School alumna and the groom works for Halliburton Oil Company in Salem. they will live there until his military service.
Mattoon Indian baseball manager Chuck Hawley underwent knee surgery and remains a patient at Terre Haute Union Hospital under a bone specialist. He has battled injury troubles for several years and is now recovering after the operation.
Mrs. Elizabeth England and cohosts hosted a surprise party Saturday November 18 at the England home in Patoka for Mrs. Harlan Goff. Relatives and friends gathered after wrestling matches on TV with refreshments and several birthday cakes. Attendees included the Goff family and many neighbors. gifts were exchanged and some guests sent gifts from afar.
A birthday and Thanksgiving dinner was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Parker honoring Mr. Willard Moeller. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Harold Parker and sons, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Parker and Wesley and Lynda Sue, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Parker of Sandoval, and the Parkers. The gathering enjoyed a turkey dinner and wished James, then in Hawaii, could have joined.

Mr and Mrs W E Willard of Bristol Virginia spent several days last week with the latter’s brother O C Schroeder and family.
Mrs Eva Denman 79 perished in a fire that destroyed her Odin residence Saturday afternoon. The two story house burned rapidly in strong winds. she left two front rooms and was found in the basement near electrical wires. Coroner’s jury ruled accidental burns. She lived in Odin all her life with surviving sister Della Underhill and brother Herman Hoskinson. Funeral held November 28 at Odin Christian church.
