Civil Service Rules Reinstates Four Guards at Vandalia

The Civil Service Commission ruled on July 18 1933 that four Illinois State Farm guards at Vandalia were discharged for political reasons and ordered reinstatement with back pay. The four named guards Louis Probst Elbert Lemley William Mattes Jr. and Elijah Haford were reinstated and returned to their positions after the commission's decision.

Emergency hog price plan goes into effect locally

Marion county farmers implement the federal hog relief program with premium prices for pigs and sows. Base rates range from 9.50 to 6.00 per hundred pounds for pigs, with five regional markets and $4 per head for sows. Inspections will be conducted by the Bureau of Animal Industry.

Vandalia Loses Power After Transformer Blaze

Vandalia endured an eleven hour blackout from 9 30 a m to 8 50 p m Monday when three transformers burned out. Repairs were brought from Belleville and on Tuesday morning the three old transformers were moved south through Patoka for rewinding and future use.

Diora Smith Oglesby born near Patoka Illinois September 14 1852 died August 21 1933 aged 80 years 11 months 7 days widow of John W Oglesby who died November 17 1904. She leaves children Sallie Henry and Hester and several grandchildren great grandchildren and siblings. Funeral services were held at the home conducted by Rev J M Smith with burial in Jones cemetery.

Public meeting on all weather Patoka to Kinmundy road

A meeting is scheduled for next Monday evening at 7 30 in the high school gym to promote the construction of an all weather road from Patoka to Kinmundy. The goal is to provide work during unemployment and to cooperate with the NRA as federal funds are allotted for county roads.
