Village streets in Patoka were freshly oiled and blotched with fine chat. A heavy asphalt base coat was laid in a wide swath and covered with blotting hat to create a cityfied appearance.
Vernon residents report visits and reunions with families in Cerro Gordo Decatur Vandalia and Danville. The Community Unit 100 schools announce a Aug 29 start with staff changes and lunch service resuming Aug 30. Marvin Ehrat, 35, Vernon, was seriously injured after a farm accident with a pitchfork and remains hospitalized.
Sunday School attendance was forty nine with “Happy Birthday” for Eileen Jones. Worship service led by Rev. D. B. Egelston included a stirring sermon from Ephesians chapter five. Congregational singing Sunday night by Bro. Luther Paine and piano by Bro. Howard Kinney. A new bulletin board on the church lawn enhances curb appeal.
Residents of Patoka Township are urged to submit their names to Dwight F. Britt, Supervisor, for consideration on the Grand Jury or Petit Jury. Deadline is September 1.
Local social notes list multiple families visiting kin in Illinois California Mississippi and Mexico. Names include Hyde Strahan Perkins Talbert Heinzman Altom Jett Goodwin Meredith Williams and Metcalf with gatherings at Freedenia Mansfield Natchez and East Fork during weekends and Sundays.
Mr and Mrs Davis Jennings and Johnny will leave Sunday for Colorado Springs Colorado to make their home. Mr and Mrs Ernest Belcher and Mr Wright of Lincoln Illinois spent Sunday with Mrs Inez O Neal.
The fifth annual Meyer descendants reunion met at Patoka Park on Sunday August 7 with a noon basket dinner. Eight guests joined about twenty attendees including Wesley Black Alma Omer Meyer I L Meyer Charles Curtit Lillian Edwards Opal Bright Harold Belcher Charles Meyer Floyd Britt and Bill Hill plus families.
Garl and Freda Arnold and daughter Margaret and Edwin and Thelma Arnold returned last Thursday from a ten day vacation through the Black Hills Bad Lands Yellowstone National Park and Colorado. They met Ralph Basset of Billings Montana and Mr and Mrs Marvin Basset and children from east of Patoka at Yellowstone. The Arnolds visited their uncle Mr and Mrs W K McNicol in Denver Colorado and Mr and Mrs Dean Good in Colorado Springs.
Kent Crawford showed his yearling Holstein heifer at the Illinois State Fair and placed twelfth in the Junior Show among a large class. Eligible participants include 4 H clubs and F F A Chapters.
Springfield Illinois August fifteenth nineteen cars antiques special merit and sports cars entered in the Antique Auto and Sports Car Meet at the 1955 Illinois State Fair will join a colorful parade in front of the grand stand before the 100 mile auto race Saturday. Secretary of State Charles F Carpentier said the entry list is the largest in five years. The exhibit shows cars from 1902 to 1955 in a tent near the Grandstand entrance. Carpentier will lead the parade in last year’s champion car. Judging will occur in the morning with awards at a banquet that evening.
The Willing Workers class of the Methodist Church held an 8:00 a.m. breakfast at Hopkins Cafe in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Darvin Jones and their daughters Valda Lyra and Sherry who are moving to Florida. Forty five members and guests enjoyed hot cakes and coffee as a television lamp was presented to the Jones by the class.
Mrs William J Gerrish of southwest of Patoka is a patient at Barnes hospital in St Louis. Her absence has guests Johnny and great grandfather William S Gerrish staying with Mr and Mrs John Gerrish in Maplewood Illinois. Older children Patricia Harlan Jane and Grant stay with cousins George and wife southwest of Patoka. Mail may be addressed to Barnes until August end.
Mr and Mrs Carl Quick of Streator announce the birth of a son on August 5 weighing 6 pounds 4 ounces. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Tom Quick of Boulder and Mr and Mrs Paul Jones of Patoka.
Sunbeam Focus Week in the Southland features a gathering at the Baptist church on Saturday August 20 at 1 p.m. The roll call will be light. An acrostic L I G H T will be presented as the group studies Indians and Moslems with Emil Nattier hosting.
Mr. Leslie Wasem entered Veterans hospital at Marion Friday for medical treatment and tests. Mrs. Wasem reports he is feeling somewhat better. Rev. Kerr resigns as pastor of Patoka Baptist Church. Miss Bettie Simecox returns home from St. Louis where employed during summer. Mrs. John L. Belcher taken to St Marys hospital for heart condition observation and improving. Leo Chandler leaves for Wisconsin before returning to Tonica Ill. Victoria Chapter officers guest at Sandoval Chapter. Gergeni family spends Friday at State Fair Springfield. Mrs. Sterling Kerr and children vacationing with relatives in Iowa.
The Conservation Club schedules a full day and evening picnic on September 3 at the new lake site east of Patoka to raise funds for improvements. The event features a fish and chicken dinner, concessions, a merry go round, dunking machine, a fishing derby, casting contest, and a district band program with Hill Billy singers. If rain forces postponement it shifts to September 10 with no re advertisement.
