Corncobs as cattle feed tested at Purdue University
Purdue experiments by W M Beeson show corncobs provide roughly the same feeding value as hay per equal weight and can yield gains over a pound daily when used as the sole roughage. Cobs are deficient in protein minerals vitamin A and available carbohydrates and need fortification with protein salt calcium phosphorus and a concentrated cod liver oil or high quality legume hay. Ninety six steers were used in the study with three corncob groups, one hay group, and two mixed rations with corn added.
