North Zion Social Notes Highlight Local Visits
Nellie Mae Hake and family from Sandoval visited with Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Jones on Tuesday. Charles Mitchell and Chris Neilson called on friends in Odin and Oak Grove districts. Zion Church Ladies Aid met at Jones School house last Thursday. Marshall and Louie Soutier were business visitors in Salem. Dr. J. C. Carter of the state Natural History Survey warns that halfway efforts against phloem necrosis, a deadly plant disease, amount to a waste of time and provide no real protection.

Elm disease prompt prompts drastic spraying plan
Dr Carter says high powered spraying equipment and DDT mixtures will stop phloem necrosis by killing the leaf hopper the disease spreads. Cities including Springfield Mattoon Lincoln Champaign Urbana and Peoria are hardest hit with thousands of elm trees destroyed. Damage is worst in southern Illinois.

Phloem Necrosis Detected In July Infected Trees
The first signs of phloem necrosis appear in July as leaves of infected trees roll yellow and wither, with death following quickly. Community control programs were tried last year by Lincoln city, Peoria park district, and UI campus Champaign Urbana. effectiveness will be known this summer as aging trees may die the year after infection.
