Fighter plane crash near Vernon kills pilot
A P-51 Mustang crashed north and east of Vernon on the Lytle Binnion farm killing Lt. Orville H. Wilkins. The 24 year old Philadelphia native died when his parachute failed to open after a torn shroud tangled with the plane during a Leap from the aircraft. Officials say fuel shortage and navigation errors contributed to the crash as the mission aimed to refuel at Memphis. The body was shipped to Philadelphia for funeral services. An official inquiry by Coroner Ross Carson and Scott Field officers deemed the accident due to lack of fuel.
