Patoka Builds Boom as Oil Draws New Homes and Firms
Following early 1937 oil development, Patoka and surrounding Southern Illinois towns surge in housing and business. About seventeen new homes plus two near town, costs from 1000 to 2000 dollars, with plainer builds doubling as demand outruns supply. Major firms add a power plant and elevator while private funds and HA Housing aid the rush. Local residents convert rooms, garages, and hen houses into living spaces, and rents rise across the basin.
