Rotation shakeup urged to gain clover bonus
Urbana Illinois April 4 Corn and wheat no longer high profit crops, says L B Miller at the University of Illinois College of Agriculture. Permanent rotation changes to include red clover could stabilize yields reduce corn costs and provide a soil improving bonus. Studies show corn oats rotation yields 34 bushels per acre versus 54 with corn oats and red clover. clover reduces land in corn to one third while boosting oats to 44 bushels per acre and supplying feed and soil benefits. Census data show corn dominates typical Illinois cropland while legumes like clover and soybeans are underrepresented. many soils need lime or phosphate to support clover.
