Patoka reports 4-H Leaders Training in Centralia and multiple social visits including style show tea in Centralia, strawberry growers meeting in Centralia, hair styling show in St. Louis, ordination at Zion Hill Baptist Church, and family gatherings in Hammond Indiana and Farmington Missouri. Several wedding and church events are noted with attendees from Patoka and nearby towns.
Revival services begin April 23 at First Baptist Church with evangelist Rev Virgil Graham from Carlyle Baptist Church. Cottage prayer meetings occur in Patoka this week with sessions on April 10 and April 20 at local homes and parsonage. Services start 7 30 PM. all are welcome.
The village warns dog owners to keep dogs tied or on a leash at all times. Complaints of dogs running loose have alarmed residents and may lead to pickup for stray animals. Cooperation is urged to prevent further incidents.
The village board decided to draft an ordinance to establish a Municipal Planning Commission of 12 members to guide village plans, with the mayor naming the members after passage. A future professional planner may be added. The board also discussed relocating the village dump and potential land donations. Illinois Power Co representatives discussed a possible gas franchise.
The junior class presents A Feudin Over Yonder this Friday at 8 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Mr and Mrs Shepard hosted an open house at the Legion Hall in Ramsey to mark their 40th wedding anniversary. The event drew 131 attendees despite bad weather, with First Pentecost Church Sunday School attendance beforehand and various relatives serving and greeting guests.
The American Legion and Auxiliary will serve a chicken supper Saturday April 7 starting at 5:30 PM at the Legion Hall. Tickets available from members or at the hall. The public is invited to attend.
The semi monthly Sunbeams resume at the Baptist church this Saturday at 1 p m. All children are invited. The memory verse centers on Helper. The Samuel oriented Bible story and questions will follow.
Henry W. Hines, 77, was found dead shortly before noon Wednesday at the J. W. Crawford farm where he had been working. Funeral arrangements are incomplete, with Cox and Martin in charge.

Community events mention Harmonettes religious music program and a Vernon Methodist WSCS meeting.
The Library Board met Saturday afternoon and approved last minutes. Donor Cleo Walker gave Look and McCalls volumes. Magazine reports were given and Story Hour by Christina Crawford drew thirteen children. An Open House for National Library Week is planned for Saturday afternoon April 14 with refreshments.
James G. McNicol 73 died at home Tuesday April 8 after a four year illness. A retired farmer born June 16 1889 in North Dakota he was married to Florence Arnold who died 1960. Survived by one son six daughters a brother twenty four grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Funeral Friday April 6 at 2 pm from Patoka Christian Church with burial in Patoka cemetery. Crematory Cox and Martin Funeral Home. Heart Fund contributions encouraged.
Harold D. Crippen announces extension of the 1962 Feed Grain program sign-up through April 14, 1962. Farmers are urged to visit the ASCS office to join and receive payments for diverting land from corn and grain sorghums to conservation uses, reducing government grain stockpiles and boosting soil and water conservation while supporting farm income.
An all day work event is planned at Bear Creek Cemetery on Saturday April 7. Volunteers are invited to take part and assist with the cleanup.
Mrs. Hollingsend and Mrs. Burks received a photo of the intramural basketball league’s all star team in England. Dale Rutledge of Base Supply, a season member, is shown among the players. Also visiting were Mr. and Mrs. Henry Meadors and Mr. and Mrs. Jank Jones in Sullivan. Mrs. Mildred Corbett of Springfield is with her mother Mrs. Hazel Hedgpeth.
Patoka community raised 221.89 for the Red Cross with 198.39 from gifts and 23 from a high school girls basketball game. P. J. Mojonnier thanks solicitors, the basketball teams, Mr. Kline, Mrs. Nall and Miss Sharp, and all helpers.
Mrs Mason Bassett hosted 18 Joy Belles Home Bureau members Monday evening March 26. Miss Marie Brite led a costume accessories lesson and film on dress design while Mrs Elston Protz demonstrated crusts for pies. A get well card was signed for Mrs Dean Jones and refreshments were served by Mrs Bassett assisted by Mrs Ryman Doolen in the co host’s absence.
Information meeting sponsored by the NFO Congressional District Organization will be held at Salem Community High School on Saturday April 7 at 2 p.m. A representative from the Department of Agriculture Washington D C will discuss proposed new farm legislation and answer questions. All farmers and interested parties are invited to attend.
Conservation Club 100 will meet at the village hall on Monday April 9 at 730 pm. Officers will be elected and all interested residents are invited to attend.
The State chest X ray unit begins its annual survey in Marion County Monday April 9 in Patoka from 10 to 1 and 2 to 5. The free X ray is available to people 30 and older or under 80 who have reacted to tuberculin tests, to detect TB and other chest illnesses. The Mobile Unit will visit various locations through May 11.
Band students attend the Flora contest on Saturday March 31 and all earned first rating. Attendees include Carmen Johnson piano solo Ronnie Jones clarinet with Carolyn Snider Delores Beck flute with Jeanne Payne Judy Carter flute with Jeanne Payne as accompanist.
Mrs Mabel Blanche Nattier Paine 65 died Tuesday at 4 30 am at her home in the Patoka area. Funeral Thursday at 3 pm from Mound Chapel Methodist Church with burial in Pratt cemetery. She was born Aug 1 1896 in Marion county and married Luther L Paine Oct 6 1915 in Fayette county. Survivors include her husband two daughters three sons a brother list of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
At the SCC board meeting on March 27 in Salem a representative from each Marion county bank attended to learn about soil and water conservation efforts. Attendees included Lee Britt ASC manager Roger Bartley IUka State Bank Jerry Sinclair Salem National Bank John Henderson City National Bank Centria. George Irwin opened the session and Lee Britt described ASC support for farm practices planned by the SCS. Les Rogers outlined cooperation with ASC and SCS to boost farm incomes and proposed longer term loans. Sam Winfrey spoke on Marion county farm problems and solutions through conservation.
