Nails as Money in Colonial Britain and America
In pre revolutionary times nails were valued as money in Scotland and New England. Jeremiah Wilkinson of Cumberland Rhode Island started America’s first nail making business in 1777. Machinery came into use after 1810, with hand forging prior. The Birmingham area once employed up to 60,000 nailers. A hydraulic process now makes paper nails that can drive into hardwood.
