Senate approves harsh narcotics bill with death penalty option

The Senate passed a tough narcotics bill by voice vote expanding penalties up to death for third-time narcotics sales or smuggling. It allows harsher prison terms for using any communications facility and removes wire tapping. Rep. Hale Boggs expects House approval next week.

Grand jury probes Van Nuys shooting case in three phases

The Los Angeles grand jury opened a three phase probe into a Van Nuys car salesman shooting with 22 witnesses. Patrick M. Bauer, 21, of Van Nuys, wounded May 1 after a drag race, testified early. Officer Jack R. Tugwell, 28, Canoga Park, suspended and later convicted of shooting without reasonable cause during the incident.

Probe of Acid Attack Urged on Labor Columnist

Crowell-Collier Publishing Co. buys Los Angeles radio station KFWB from Harry Maizlish for over two million dollars. Water skier swept to death at Sho shone Falls Idaho

The Snake River swept 32 year old Melvin W. Hulbert of Boise over Sho shone Falls near Twin Falls while bystanders watched. Witnesses said Hulbert lost balance fell from a lagoon upstream and drifted toward the falls as rescuers in a tow boat tried to reach him in the dangerous swift water. The body remained missing.
