In Rosemead, a gunman held two women for over two hours before Temple City sheriff sergeant Leghorn calmed him at 9148 Ralph. Officer Caldwell spoke with the suspect for 15 minutes before he surrendered the weapon. Victims Jewell Ledbetter and Charlene Woellsl were treated for shock.
Los Angeles county supervisors approved an ordinance to vaccinate all dogs over six months in unincorporated areas by licensed veterinarians. The measure, effective June 15, passed 4 to 1 with Supervisor Herbert C. Legg voting against. Estimated vaccine cost ranges from three to five dollars.
Attorney General Edmund G. Brown charged that Southern California liquor licenses paid out more than 525000 in excess of state fees to gain favorable treatment under William G. Bonelli. The special report to Gov. Knight accuses Bonelli of organizing large scale cash and carry liquor dealings across Los Angeles San Diego Orange San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. Bonelli served on the Board of Equalization 1938 to 1954 and now faces indictment for conspiracy bribery and violating the state election code while living in Arizona.
Secretary of Defense Wilson told a Senate subcommittee that B 52 bomber production will rise to 20 a month from six, countering claims the U S trails the USSR in air power. He noted total 36 billion dollar budget for the year and emphasized no arms race escalation.

More than 100 city rubbish collectors and families picketed a Los Angeles council hearing on a proposed municipally owned collection system valued at 3.3 million dollars. They accuse Mayor Norris Poulson of plotting a rubbish empire.
At a hearing Andrew V. Hohn described a plan to form a three firm syndicate to bid on city and county rubbish collection contracts. Kazarian testified about two meetings at Marcel's Restaurant on Manchester Blvd with Hohn and Floyd Crutchfield to pool equipment. He said the fund to raise was proposed, but Crutchfield and Moore were not fully confirmed and Kazarian declined involvement.

Three Army men drowned when two amphibious vehicles swamped in rough seas during night training at Fort Story. Seven others escaped as 24 men aboard were returning from Arctic operations. The bodies were not recovered and identities awaited next of kin notification.
Richmond Professional Institute sophomore James Edward Whitlow, 21, of Clover Virginia, was found wounded in his dorm room after multiple shots from a .38 pistol. Alfred Vischio, 21, of Brooklyn New York, was arrested within an hour and charged with first degree murder.

United Press reports spring floods covered 1000 square miles of southwest Alaska trapping the 100 residents of a village on the roof of a two story building. Floodwaters poured from the Kuskokwim and Nushagak rivers endangering 150 native families. The village Sleitmut lies 208 miles northwest of Anchorage.
A heavy flagpole toppled during a royal procession in Torquay England missing Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh by about 10 feet. The 25 foot pole slammed into a car behind them but the roof held and the occupants were not hurt.
The Los Angeles County Grand Jury seeks a court order to compel two witnesses to testify on May 29 in the Evelyn Throsby Scott missing heiress probe. Pasadena attorney James Boyle may be forced to reveal contents of Mrs. Scott's will and Marianne Beamon may be compelled to answer about her associations with Scott since May of last year. Scott, under indictment over his missing wife's estate, did not attend a judgment debtor hearing. If he does not appear May 15 to plead to forgery and grand theft charges, prosecutors will proceed without him.
Los Angeles report shows Permanente Cement Co earnings up 24 percent in 1955 from 1954. Sales and operating revenues climbed 9 percent. Dividends totalled 1.00 per share, including a year end extra of 0.20, up 0.10 from 1954.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles to report tonight on NATO council dispute over Russian peace tactics. Officials fear some allies may cut draft periods or defense spending, weakening the alliance against Soviet aggression. The contrast with US estimates was highlighted at the Paris meeting.

AFL CIO President George Meany told a Senate committee the minimum wage should rise from 1 to 1.25 dollars and be broadened to include half of the 20 million workers now exempt. He cited counter girls, rural telephone operators, loggers and other "forgotten workers" as earning sub standard wages.

Elaine Milton 21 of Dayton Ohio and John Sideris 31 say they will wed after resurfacing from hiding amid her mother Mrs George Milton protests. Mrs Milton alleges Elaine was kidnapped and held by Sideris family before arriving in Greece. Elaine denies abduction and asserts love for Sideris and plans to marry whether in Greece or United States.
