Joseph W. Verodi, 38, was found guilty of first degree murder for killing his 9 year old daughter Marie Yvonne in San Gabriel. A Pasadena Superior Court jury recommended life imprisonment after four hours of deliberation. Verodi faces a sanity trial Monday at 9:45 am, as his defense claims insanity.
President Eisenhower continues to convalesce at Walter Reed Army Hospital and expects a restful weekend with reading, radio music, and quiet time. He walked briefly, signed nine bills and papers, and will meet with Nixon and Dulles on Monday while avoiding discussions of his re election plans.
Three people died and at least 14 were injured at the Bermite Powder Co plant near Saugus in three explosions. Victims include Herman Zachow 50 of Saugus Pablo E Avila Jr 25 of Piru and Alma Trowbridge 35 of San Fernando. Two other women were hospitalized and a dozen workers were treated for minor injuries.
Mrs Edward G Robinson Sr said there is absolutely no chance of reconciliation with her actor husband. She expects about $3 million from the divorce set for July 20 in Santa Monica Superior Court and reports persistent interest from art collectors in their Beverly Hills collection. She looks forward to returning to California for the divorce with pleasure.
In Cross Keys Glamorgan shire England officials plan a Lady Godiva reenactment with 26 year old model Dierdre Probert riding a white horse. She will wear a four foot blonde wig and will be secured by a 14000 dollar insurance policy as protection against risk. Councillor Douglas Morgan jokes about detecting any clothing beyond the wig.
Army Pvt. Edward Medeiros, living near Fort Shafter for nearly 11 years, was convicted of wartime desertion. An Army court martial sentenced him to two years hard labor and forfeiture of all pay. He had deserted in 1945 and worked as a guard at Hawaiian Pineapple Co. plant. He was arrested April 26 and said he had planned to return to the Army hundreds of times but family finances blocked him. He offered no explanation for the long lapse in locating him. He commented that the sentence could have been worse.
Sonora District Attorney Scott K. Carter, who oversaw a January gambling raid, offered his resignation yesterday to the Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors.

Two American Roman Catholic priests, Rev. John William Clifford and Rev. Thomas Leonard Phillips, reported from Shanghai by telephone that they are released and well. Peiping Radio announced they are being freed. Their families in San Francisco expressed relief at the news after the call to The Associated Press.
A traffic analyst reported at a UCLA conference that Pasadena saw a 30 percent drop in crashes in the first month after radar speed checks began. Ed Grantow of the Pasadena police said the radar, operated from a parked car, reduces average speeds quickly. The device scans speeds in both directions, selects the fastest, and times it. Pasadena and Santa Ana are the only Southern California cities using radar speed control at present.
President Eisenhower accepted the resignation of Education Commissioner Samuel M. Brownell. He lauded Brownell for efforts that assured a sound solution to the most difficult problems of atomic age education.
Governor Averell Harriman of New York moves to organize support from 11 western states for the Democratic presidential nomination. He lands in Denver with Stephen Mitchell and plans to address Welby fundraisers and a three county dinner. Maj. Gen. Russell Deane Ret. will speak before Harriman arrives, joined by Oklahoma Gov. Raymond Gary delivering a major address. Deane, an WW II ally, has led a Moscow mission. Western rally aims to spark a nationwide Harriman effort focusing on western appeals.
The Navy's newest and fastest Demon interceptor jet is in operation with a Pacific Fleet unit. The aircraft, described as combining fighter maneuverability with bomber load capacity, was accepted for Fighter Squadron 124 at Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego.
The first class of cadets at the nation’s new Air Force Academy has completed its freshman year and begins a summer of practical training. Now sophomores, they will visit major air bases, fly small planes, and practice navigation in training aircraft.

Five Baptist delegates from the Soviet Union arrived to join the American Baptist convention and reported Russian Baptist membership growth of 10,000 to 20,000 annually. Jakov Zhidkov, president of the all union Evangelical Christian Baptists council, noted about 20 percent of Russian congregations are young people and Russia has around 520,000 Baptists with 5400 churches. Regular attendance nears 3,000,000, with membership often probationary for one to three years before full status.
Frank Albert Yarlet aged 57 of Oroville died when his car lost control on a curve five miles south of here. The vehicle skidded 200 feet after overturning late yesterday.
In Washington Christian Pineau arrives to press the United States to support France’s policy toward Algerian Nationalists. Boston. Thieves broke into a guest room at the Ritz Carlton last night and carried off nearly $60,000 in jewels and furs. Wal lace M. Scudder, 46, of Bondville, VI, owner and director of the Newark Evening News, identified the loot and said a bracelet was taken from a drawer.

In Winslow Arizona US Forest Service crews volunteers and Indian firefighters fought high winds to control a multi million dollar blaze that has consumed more than 16000 acres of virgin timber near Sitgreaves National Forest. Between 800 and 1400 men battled the fire as winds remained 18 to 20 miles per hour. FBI began exploring causes including accidental camper fire or deliberate ignition as part of standard procedure.
Char lene Smith, 18, of Watsonville California, arrested in the Sandia Bank burglary case at a New Mexico Air Force base, pleaded innocent to a concealed weapon charge in Redwood City. Judge Edward J. Ryan set her trial for June 22.
