Texas Tank Blast Douses Shamrock. 15 Dead, 31 Hurt

A 20 000 barrel pentane tank at Shamrock Oil and Gas farm exploded sending a fireball miles high. Fifteen workers died instantly and 31 were injured as flames spread to three other tanks. Shamrock officials and volunteers battled the blaze amid collapsing structures and drifting smoke.

Girl Killed, 18 Hurt in Mount Hood Hiking Accident

A teen climbing party fell into a 40 foot crevasse on Mount Hood. One teen died Lynn Kaufman 16 of Larchmont N Y and 18 were injured many critically. Rescue crews rushed injured to Timberline Lodge as planes dropped blood plasma and medics supplies.

Plan to set up international board for Suez role

American support was asked today for a plan to create an international board with Russia to control the Suez Canal and guarantee freedom of passage for ships of all nations. The proposal, aimed at countering Egyptian President Nasser's canal seizure, was presented to policy makers of the three Western powers in London during a crisis meeting.

Deathbed Clings as 109-Year-Old Woolson Fights

Albert Woolson 109, last surviving Grand Army of the Republic veteran, remains critically ill in St Luke's Hospital Duluth. He has shown no response since a coma began early Saturday while daughters kept overnight vigil. He has been hospitalized since last Memorial Day and was in an oxygen tent for several days.

Nurse 19 Slain on Lookout Mountain Bus

A 19-year-old nurse Mildred Higgins was shot to death on a Lookout Mountain bus in Chattanooga. Police hold the bus driver’s wife, 40-year-old Lillian M. Turner, as a murder suspect after the shooting. Five other passengers escaped unharmed.

Elderly man dies after bath accident in Los Angeles

George Smith 84 slipped in a bath at 939 N Oxford Ave and cut himself on a broken bottle, severing an artery and bleeding to death. His daughter Mrs Lucille Work and her husband Robert discovered the body as they watched television in the living room. Police reported the death as accidental.

Crews Stop Dangerous Canyon Fire in San Bernardino Mountains

Fire crews contained what was called the most potentially dangerous blaze of the year in Waterman Canyon eight miles north of San Bernardino. The 150 acre fire prompted 230 firefighters to build fire breaks and backfires with 15 pumping units and five bulldozers. No injuries or property damage reported.
