Herbert Francis Hayes 29 of Compton chose to ride a 40000 pound runaway truck rather than jump. The Highway Patrol credits his decision with possibly saving many lives as the rig sped at 110 mph before leaving the road and overturning. Hayes was crushed under the load after the 50 foot embankment fall. In Long Beach an 18 year old man John Hardy was killed when steel pipe broke loose from a truck and buried him in a pipe yard.
